  • what can I trash in my 1 TB project to make more space on the ext drive?

I am working on a 50 minute documentary in Final Cut Pro 7 and closing in on final cut. The project is on a 1 TB portable Lacie drive, including the capture scratch. I’m trying to ingest a few more clips and of course will need more space for rendering, autosave etc, but the drive is full (all it has is this project) and the remaining clips won’t ingest.

What can I clear and trash? How about the autosave vault? What is safe and what is not? Please advise. Thanks!

firstly, if you don’t have a pressing timeline and can endure another long render, find the media manager in FCP and clear your renders.

You can also use the Media Manager to consolidate a project onto a new location (ie. new folder or whole new drive). With this, it will carry across only the used media.

I’d always as a rule leave the autosave vault well alone. The file sizes are small and wouldn’t free up enough to make a huge difference.

I’ve been deleting many duplicate files and that helps of course. I’m still working out how to organize these larger projects without creating multiple clips when I subclip things and remove limits etc. Deleting autosave and CFs haven’t hurt things so far, but if anyone could share what they do to safely make space in an ongoing project I’d really appreciate it.

Justin already told you what to do.
You don’t need really need render files till you export.
Anyway the best solution is to get a new HD.
HDs too full are prone to causing problems.
They should have at least a 10% free space.

Okay thanks Rafael. I do need another HD, but trying to limp along until the funds come in. I’ve already got 5 TB of dedicated storage. High def takes up so much space. Need to clean house.
