What audio format should I render to for Blu-ray disks ?

On several tutorials I have see the advice to use Sony Wave64
Yet on Sony’s own site it advise that its better to use AC3 as it does not have to be re-encoded in DVD Architect.

I notice that the Dolby AC3 template states ‘AC3 Stereo DVD’ but that may not in itself be an issue.
I did a test render using both …. one obvious point is that w64 files are about x10 the size of AC3 files.
    AC3 encodes at 192Kbps while w64 uses 536kbps

Although Sony.w64 is used as the audio render in several tutorials, just been advised this is Sony proprietary format and not Blu-ray compliant, so presumably must be re-encoded by DVD architect.
To get compliant PCM would need to use Microsoft .wav templates

Source used within movie studio project is mp3 .. 192Kbps or 265kbps stereo

so would I be better using AC3 ?

Also googling here & on Sony web site see conflicting messages … i.e on Sony Expert tips
    # https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/authoring_and_burning_blu-ray_discs
It states “You can use either PCM or AC3 audio formats for your Blu-ray disc.”

Yet in the DVD 5 architect manual “AC3 audio is only for DVD”

    On Sony Bly-ray settings guide-
    https://www.custcenter.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4875/~/render-settings-for-a-blu-ray-disc
states to use AC3 or .wav

    all very confusing (to me)

If you have DVD Architect Studio 5, it’s PCM audio (.wav or .w64).

Towards the end of this thread.

I had come across that post in my searches .. i.e. ac3 only for DVD.
If you look at links I posted, Sony state that you can use ac3
    Hence my confusion.

I’ll go with Sony w64 then, (uncompressed pcm) and ignore the more than 50x increase in file size 🙂

SCS forgets to make it clear in some of their documents that there is a difference between DVD A Studio and DVD A Pro.
Note the last but one post in the thread I mentioned in my previous post.
AC-3 Pro is a customizable version of the AC-3 encoder. It is the version that ships with Vegas Pro. AC-3 Studio is non-customizable and ships with (Vegas) Movie Studio Platinum.

OK … so Sony .w64 (uncompressed PCM) it is then

[Rick Hughes] “OK … so Sony .w64 (uncompressed PCM) it is then”

If you use that your audio will be recompressed to AC3.

Your choices for DVD compliance are Microsoft PCM (WAV) or Dolby Digital AC3 and NOT Sony Wave64 which is a proprietary format that can’t be placed on DVDs.

Since your source is already low quality MP3 why not use the higher quality AC3? You really don’t want to recompress MP3 audio too many times.

John, the OP is asking “what audio format for Blu-ray.”
He has (MS Platinum 12 and) DVD Architect Studio. It does not recompress (the *.w64 render) in the OP’s case.

From the thread linked above in my post.
    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/208/879818

(“Only PCM Stereo audio is available for Blu-ray Disc projects.”
Yea, I missed that… I had the project set to DVD. You’re correct that DVD Architect Studio only allows PCM audio for Blu-ray.

    John you mention DVD compliance.
    This is Blu-ray not DVD.
That is why I understood .w64 would produce Blu-ray compliant uncompressed PCM.

I am also unsure of whether DVD architect will allow .ac3 … manual says no, but Sony expert tips say yes.

Is there a way to create Blu-ray disc image (avoid wasting blanks)
Can then try alternative codec and see if they are re-encoded or not.

Use (in your DVD A Studio 5) Make Blu-ray Disc > Prepare. The Review Message List > Optimize… will advise you of the recompressions. 10-second test projects are enough to tell you what happens.
It will recompress my *.ac3 file from MSP 12.
And get a BD-RE to avoid wasting blanks in testing.

Thanks … didn’t know of that option.

    Assume BD-RE the same as a DVD-rw. I’ll go but a pack.

OK. I didn’t realize he was using the Studio version.
