    It’s more a cache than a render file.

    When you enable waveforms in your timeline, that information gets written to a file. You will find them in the FCP Docs folder in their own folder marked “Waveform Cache Files”

    The computer renders the image of the waveform once and stores it, as a way to reduce processing overhead, by not having to constantly re-draw the waveform for you in real time, just so you can see it scrolling along with your video timeline. These waveform visual image files can take up a lot of space over time. If you trash them, the computer will just rebuild them fresh.
