What are some of the techniques used for this commercial?
Trying to understand how this commercial may have been made from a technical standpoint. Any ideas? All AE compositing or some sort of 3D software? Something else? And not just “what software did they use” but how would you pull of something like that as far as production goes?

Pretty trivial actually, since the “frames” are nearly all 2D rectangles, you can do this with empty frames (or in some shots, a solid card with tracking marks), and Mocha – track the rectangles in Mocha, then add in the appropriate image in AE. Easy peasy.

What about when the “frames” go behind other frames? Can Mocha handle that?
The idea that we’ve got would be basically a pile of photos that get load on top of each other in a messy pile and occasionally some of those photos would turn into videos, then more photos/videos would be roughly laid on top (but would still want to show some parts of the footage).
How would that be pulled off?

When frames go behind other frames. you’ll need to use masks – Mocha is great here too, as you can make roto masks that auto-track the moving objects.
Currently you can get Mocha 2.6 for AE, which comes with a free plugin for AE that allows for easy import of Mocha data.
