Weird Interlacing Issue involving Filters
I have a question regarding a weird interlacing issue we have been having. We work with 29.97 fps interlaced NTSC footage captured off of Beta SP and DigiBeta tapes. We are capturing them through our Matrox box as “Matrox MXO2 – Uncompressed NTSC 8-bit 48 kHz” and editing them within an uncompressed 8-bit timeline. We have always dealt with the usual interlacing issues considering we are working with interlaced video, however, we recently did a clean install on our Mac (2 x 2.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 12 GB of RAM). Since this moment, anytime we try to export uncompressed footage as uncompressed with any sort of filter on it, we are getting the most obnoxious interlacing ever. It sort of vibrates and the combing is extremely exaggerated. We’ve done a number of test, and we have found the problem seems to start as soon as we add a logo or the TCR filter to the footage (it is always either or, we hardly ever send out clean footage). This never used to happen before the clean install. Everything, including the Matrox Box, has been updated and set to the correct settings as we were using before reinstalling everything. Using a flicker filter sort of solves the line problem, but it is still not ideal. The deinterlacing filters makes the file crazy jaggedy and completely unacceptable for delivery. The footage looks great before import into Final Cut, but always looks bad on export. Tried Compressor, but it seems to aggravate the line issue even more. The flicker filter has been helping us since the problem..other work arounds would be great, but in the end, we would like to solve the problem considering it came out of nowhere and seems to be an utter mystery. We even switched out the Quad-core to a different one and the problem still exists in the same way.
Just ask for any additional information I left out, and thanks in advance for any advice that can be shelled out regarding this completely pointless and aggravating problem. Why would the interlacing go crazy over a time code reader filter or adding a bug to the clip??

Are you sure that the field order isn’t getting switched somewhere in your process. That could cause the jitter you are describing.

Tried every variation of field order, but it all still looks the same. Using “none” takes it away, but since it is not progressive, shouldn’t it be set to lower (even)? Is that the same thing as deinterlacing it? Tried calling apple support, and all they could say is that it is a textbook case of interlacing!! but um…however, why would the video not look interlaced until a logo or timecode is added?? If the footage is clean, it looks great…no obnoxious interlacing at all actually.
