weird green bar 1/3 of screen in compressor
Posted by Conrad Melanson on December 16, 2010 at 3:56 amWondering if anyone has experienced any issues with Compressor exporting video with a large horizontal green bar about 1/3 the vertical size of the screen and about half way down the screen?
I just purchased a new mac pro i7 12 core and installed fcp 6.06 with compressor 3.05. I have two other systems, and Imac core 2 duo and a G5 dual 2ghz with the same software config and yet they both compress the same clip no problem.
i was down converting a 1080i clip to SD DVD in Compressor and the output was as described. I tried different codecs and the results were similar with the green bar. I did have some success with the other codecs by turing off the frame controls but yet no luck with the DVD encode.
Anyone have any similar issues? and hopefully some helpful tips?
Best Regards,

December 16, 2010 at 11:59 amHi Conrad,
That does sound like a DEMO MODE watermark we used to use on a much older version of Calibrated{Q} XD Decode ( a XDCAM Decode codec we sell) – the watermark was a gray bar, about 1/3 size vertical in middle of the screen.
But since you have a new computer and it has FCP ( Calibrated{Q} XD Decode is not meant for computers with FCP) – then this may not be the problem…..
If you go to the /Library/QuickTime folder (that’s the Library folder on your Main Harddrive NOT the Library folder in your User directory) – if you see a CalibratedXDCodec.component – delete it and then restart your computer.
Cheers,

December 16, 2010 at 3:54 pmThanks Greg,
Did what you suggested but did not find the CalibratedXDCodec.component in the folder you indicated. There were other .component files but not the one you mentioned. Will keep trying different settings in Compressor.
Yesterday when this occurred we were compressing/down-converting a 1080i file, (DVC pro HD output from fcp) to 720 x 480 Qucktime H264. This also occurred when converting the same 1080 i source file to mpeg 2.
We even got the same results exporting the same file to other frame sizes in H264 outputs. Then we turned off frame controls in Compressor and the problem went away.
yet when we went back to compressing to mpeg 2 in compressor, form the same source file the problem persisted.
Finally tried Adobe encoder to compress the file to Mpeg 2 and that worked fine. But no luck with Compressor.
Thanks for your post

February 17, 2011 at 6:56 pmHI Mike,
I’m still having the problem and have escalated the issue with my local tech. Interestingly it’s only happening on my new Mac Pro 12 core. When I encode the same clip with my older core 2 duo imac I get no green bar issues. Yet on the 12 core the issue persists. I am wondering if it has to do with the settings in AppleQmaster and how many cores I have associated to processing for Compressor. will post my findings as soon as I have an answer.
Best Regards,

Thanks for responding. It’s only an issue with our 12 core machine as well and only when our source is HD. I am using Compressor DVD presets and default Compressor render management.
I have Episode Pro and Adobe Media Encoder on the box as well and they produce the same files just fine. In general I have noticed weird things happening in FCP Studio on the 12 core that do not happen on any of our Quad Core machines (increased instability, bad playback, and of course, our friend the green bar).Best,
Mike

June 29, 2011 at 10:29 pmI have just started having this issue, and I’m also on the newer 12-core Mac Pro. Compressor exports just fine to H.264 (from 1080 60i source), but then exporting to MPEG-2 gives me the green bar, with a frozen shot on the top of the bar, and the video moving normally (yet jerky in movement) on the bottom. I’ve disabled Qmaster, but that doesn’t change anything.
This is Final Cut Pro Studio 2. Anyone ever find a solution to this?

June 29, 2011 at 11:30 pmI think I may have recently discovered the problem. When converting HD content, such as 1080 or 720, we noticed that when the frames control was set to on, we get a green bar on the encoded output, regardless of the output codec. When we stated setting the frame controls to off we no longer got the green bar effect.
I suggest you try this and let me know if you get the same results.
Cheers
Conrad

December 11, 2011 at 6:36 amIt works when you switch off the frame controls but the quality of encode is very poor…If you compare the encode from 8 core the quality is worst…I have compressor in my mac book..If i encode the same file it give much better results…

February 24, 2017 at 7:45 amHello from Germany,
I’m encoutering the exact same problem here on my MacPro 5,1 12-core machine. Before I had a MacPro 3,1 8-core and it worked flawlessly with Compressor resizing footage using Frame Controls. So, it seems to be Hardware-related. I also installed only FCP 6.0.6 and Compressor 3.0.5 on a fresh Mac OS and it produced the same green bars. It doesn’t matter which format you use as a source or destination. It also works with Frame Controls ON as long as the Image Size is 100% source. If it’s a different size, the artifacts suddenly appear.
Any ideas on solving this problem?
