Weird colour splotches in Sony Vegas not in Media Player
Hello,
When I record gameplay for youtube it comes out fine when I replay it back on windows media player, but when I import it into Sony vegas to render it, it sometimes gets weird splotches of colour or black or artifacts a lot. In some scenes the colours will all sort of blend together and some of them turn to their negatives and then it will changes back on its own. It doesn’t happen all the time and it just seems to happen when a scene is busy or fast. If you skip to the 6:50 mark when the guy gets stabbed you can see a lot of weird black artifacts show up and then disappear a few seconds later. this is a mild form of it and like I said it never happens in windows media player, only when I preview it in Vegas and it remains when I render it out. This is usually caused by a codec incompatibility. What codec do the files use? I’m assuming it’s DivX, XviD, or some other h.264 variant that Vegas doesn’t like. Unfortunately the fix it to not use that codec for editing.

Yeah I’m using the H.264/x264 codec to record with Dxtory. I usually just open the recorded file in Vegas and start editing, the codecs are great for recording though because they create smaller files. Is there a way to convert them without losing the quality in the original clip?

Yea, so that’s the problem.

No. re-encoding will always loose some quality unless you use a lossless codec to begin with. Can you capture with a different codec? Perhaps using Motion-JPEG (M-JPEG)? What good are small file sizes if you can’t edit them? And it doesn’t matter what the file size is when you are capturing and editing; what matters is that they are small when you deliver them.
Having said that you might try to re-encode them to M-JPEG with a free tool like AviDemux 2.5 and see if the quality is acceptable to you. Here is how you would do it:

Thanks so much for the advice, at least now I know what the problem is and can rectify it. I can try other codecs, only reason I had used x264 before was due to the good quality:smaller sizes ratio. But I can play around a bit more now. And if I get into bother again I will use the tool to see what it looks like 🙂

The key is to use a codec that doesn’t compress the video too much. So small size is actually not good when capturing. You want to capture all of the detail and then you can compress it down later for delivery. There are free codecs like Huffyuv and Lagarith that are lossless but they produce incredibly large file sizes. Usually M-JPEG is a good trade-off between file size and quality. Good luck.
