WD 2TB & 3TB Green Drives: is anyone else having trouble with these?

they are internal drives that i used in my BlacX caddy, but invariably when i use them other programs/applications tend to crash. i’ve saved stuff to them successfully, but find them not-so-useful since while they’re on i can’t do much else. i’m guessing a re-formatting would be in order, but just seeing if anyone else has had this experience first. thanks!

I tried the green 1TB drives in an audio RAID5. They are not designed for such abuse and they try to save power which can slow down real time performance in critical situations. I would never consider them for video and even with audio they eventually started to give problems.

Use the Black or Red WD drives for video RAIDs.

ya, that makes sense. i wasn’t using them in a RAID, but simply for archiving. . . but those will be that first and last greenies i buy. thanks for the confirmation that it’s the drive technology.

Thus why they are called “Green.” They do things to conserve power, like spin down…and I believe they are also 5400 RPM, not the 7200 that is needed for video.

My experience with WD have been disastrous.
4 drives bought and 4 drives died after very short use of them even haven’t been used for editing.

I have had a good run with WD both as internal RAIDs plus client drives. But use the Black as they are designed for enterprise robust conditions

So what brand do you use? i’ve had good luck with WD and Seagate, though i’ve heard people say they have had problems with one or the other. the only brand i currently stay away from is LaCie. i don’t think i had any live for more than a year.

I’ve have 6 drives go bad on me prematurely over the years. Five have been WD, the other a Seagate Barracuda. The Seagate lasted just over 13 months – really surprised me since I’ve had very good experience with them on at least 10 other drives.
