  Way to retain temporal resolution when converting 50fps tp 25fps?

  Hi All,

   

  So I’ve got some old DVCam footage that looks like crap (surprise, surprise). I ran it through Topaz enhance, which has done a pretty amazing job of deinterlacing 720 25i to 1080 50p.

  So I *could do the typical thing and simply discard every second frame to get it to 25p, but I’m wondering if there’s any way to interpolate the extra information in the in-between frames back into the kept frames? In other words, is there a way to take the extra temporal resolution of the 50p, and convert it into spatial resolution in the 25p output?

  I figure that’s not as crazy as it sounds because turning the 25i into 50p involves interpolating more information between the field lines, not generating extra frames, per se, so each frame is still a unique moment in time which has not itself been fully derived from frames before or after. There is extra information there that I’m throwing away, surely?

  I’ve tried interpreting the 50p footage as 25p, then speeding it up 200% and using optical flow, but it didn’t make any visible difference. The only mode that really made any visible difference was frame blending, and it was not a *good difference.

  I was kind of looking for a smart algorithm to use the in-between frames to give even more detail, but maybe the smart AI in Topaz Enhance has already pretty much done that. As I said, it did a pretty good job, given the input footage.
