Was I right to author and burn at 720 x 576?
I have a question about picure resolution when it comes to DVD authoring, and please be aware that I am no expert in video, and that I come from an audio background.
I filmed some footage using a camera with an HD picture resolution of 1280 x 720. I then imported this footage into Adobe Premiere Pro, which I edited into a film. I then rendered the film at 720 x 576, before converting it to DVD Video format using SUPER.
Since burning the DVD, I worried that it might have been wrong for me to import the footage at 1280 x 720, and then render at 720 x 576, which might reduce the picture quality. But then I read here that 720 x 576 is the standard for a PAL DVD Video:

So did I do the right thing in rendering the film at 720 x 576? And is it true that all commercial PAL DVD Videos are 720 x 576?

Great, thanks for that. It really surprised me that DVD Videos are only 720 x 576. I would assume that they would be a lot more, for the likes of HD. But then maybe that’s what Blu Ray is for…

It’s worse than you think as the MPEG 2 compression for DVD really degrades the picture. Blu-Ray is better but still compresses considerably from the original.

Yeah it’s crazy. It’s a similar thing with music – CD’s are dying and being replaced by digital downloads, but that means going down in quality from 16-bit WAV to MP3.
