Want tp pre-order the Panasonic HVX200. Advice please
Posted by Harry on June 15, 2005 at 2:42 pm6/15/05
I want to pre-order the new Panasonic due out in November. I live in LA and would like to save tax by ordering out of state. Is B&H a good bet? Does anyone else have experience in trying to get in line early like this.
Your thoughts please.
Harry.
PS. I saw and have lost a recent ad/article on the portable hard drive for this camera … About $1000 for “pro version” – 80 gigs (not much space, huh?) Can anyone remind me where I saw this drive and what the manufacturer’s name is?

June 17, 2005 at 1:36 amHi,
Yes, we have locations in CA and NY so tax applies to citizens of both states.
I just would like to mention that we in comparison to different vendors provide support and service for equipment purchased trough us. That means that let’s say your microphone holders brakes and you can get part from us immedietely or within couple of days most. Otherwise you need to contact manufacturer and sometimes getting camera fixed, maintained takes longer and you do not have option to call and have free support as well.
I thought that would be things to consider for future puchasers of P2, HDV or HD cameras.
Please do not hesitate to call me or ask questions.

unless you’ve seen something i haven’t, there is no hard drive recorder yet. (but then, there’s no camera yet, either.)
it seems like there are strong indications (nothing official) that firestore, who make these drives for other cameras, are most likely going to be developing one. but it’s all vaporware at this point.well the other thing you could have been thinking of is the thing panny makes for dumping the p2 cards to hard drive. it’s essentially a portable, battery powered drive that can back up the cards. but it doesn’t connect to the camera. you just haul this thing around (i don’t think it’s cheap either,) and back up your p2’s with it when they fill up.

June 17, 2005 at 7:44 pmI remember reading about the Panny dump drive awhile back and I do recall there was mention of an option to record directly to that drive instead of the P2 cards, but that may have changed by now. Until the products go into production, we will all have to wait and see the true specs and performace capabilities.

June 17, 2005 at 7:45 pmAre residents of other states able to order in person at your storefont and not pay sales tax?

June 18, 2005 at 6:30 amBrian,
Please call for details. I am not sales person and you will be probably talking to somebody else from sales.
I will maintain/service your equipment later and provide technical support.
I am monitoring this and other forums for technical reasons but I thought I it will be wise to mention benefits that you will get by buying from authorized dealer that offers more options than most of the vendors.

June 22, 2005 at 5:17 amI believe that you can step up to the counter and order without paying tax – if equipment is shipped to out of state address where merchant does not have a physical presence. But, you cannot take delivery of merchandise at the store without being charged sales tax. It used to be poular for stores in Manhatten, for example, to ship an empty box to New Jersey while customer took actual delivery of product in the store. A famous corporate exec currently in the news was prosecuted for shipping empty box to New Jersey to avoid sales tax while actually accepting a million dollar work of art in Manhatten. He was found guilty of not paying sales tax – although that crime is now the least of his problems.
Some states (Florida is one) allow sales tax exemptions for purchases of production related equipment to registered production companies. However, even when an out of state purchase avoids sales tax of shipping state – the purchaser is probably required to pay a Use Tax (equal to sales tax) to his or her home state. Ultimately, there is no (legal) escape.
