  • Want to compress ProRes media to outsource, then relink later

Posted by Katie Van on July 1, 2008 at 3:01 am

We need to outsource a scene to another editor with sort of limited drive space. We’ve just been editing everything at ProRes, which we shot at, but of course this is huge.

Can someone recommend a good conversion to use to make footage copies for the other editor? We’ll keep our original ProRes quicktimes, so we’re hoping we can give her some smaller media and then just relink her cut to our media. As long as the frame rate is the same that should work, right?

    Appreciate any suggestions

What format and frame rate is your ProRes footage?

    Hi Jeremy,

    Our A camera is 23.98, 1920x1080i, shot on the P2 3,000

B camera is 1280 x 1080, shot on the P2 200, and was 29.97 until you helped me with a reverse Telecine conversion. So now everything is 23.98. The frame sizes still differ, and some of the B camera is DVCPRO, because the ProRes reverse telecine was eating up so much drive space.

    Is that enough info?

    How could I forget?

    Yes, it’s almost enough info.

How much space do you need and how much does your colleague have?

Yes, would you believe I’m still employed?

We have about 550 GB so far to give her. We’re hoping we can clear off a 500 GB drive for her. So we’d like to leave safety on that, and will probably find more footage she needs.

You better be after that sweet reverse telecine you did all on your own 😉

I would just buy a bigger drive and save yourselves the hassle. Single 1TB drives are around $200 these days.

That way you can keep the original media and not take up MORE space by making more files and you won’t have to go through the hassles of reconnecting.

If that’s not an option, I’d take the original media (and not any exported media) and make dv 23.98 movies in Compressor. Those will be very small, but they won’t be HD so some reconnecting issues may occur with aspect ratios and such, nothing that won’t be fixed. Even if you take the ProRes stuff and make it DVCPRo HD 23.98, it’ll be smaller.

    Ok, buying a new drive.

    Thanks again!
