I’ve got the $$$ togethor to finally get a DVX 100, the last time i checked (a year ago) they where under 3,000. Now I am seeing there is a new version called the DVX 100B that is out of my price range especially since i want to get a light kit, tripod, mike of some sort..etc..Can i still buy a DVX 100a?
I’m afraid thats the only one I can afford and I feel a little weird buying something that pricey off of ebay. I’d want the warranty and all…any thoughts?

New- no. Used on eBay- sure. Just be careful- ask for the drum hours. That means how much recording the cam has done. If they don’t know what you’re talking about try another.

B&H Photo has the camera for $3500 and then there is a $350 MIR. So you are just over $3K I would pay a couple of hundred more for an unused camera or if you buy used you need to be very careful I would buy from a used dealer with a good rep.

Thanks guys, I just bought the camera from FullCompass.com
I spoke with a great guy named Zach who works at Fullcompass, he knows what he is talking about, not pushy, and made the sale happen. Full compass is a breathe of fresh air from having to deal with some of the other grey market companies I was trying to go through in order to get a “to good to be true price”.
I ended up going over 3,000 but i am getting some extras with the camera. I am thrilled with the service at fullcompass.com and I am happy to be getting my camera.

Make sure they are an authorized dealer. Ask for a full U.S. Panasonic warranty in writing before you pay for the camera. If it’s under $3K chances are it’s a grey market import meaning you get no U.S. warranty and if anything goes wrong with the camera you have to mail it back to Japan(!).

What is the maximum acceptable drum hour? Someone is selling me a used DVX 100 (without the a nor b) with the LCD broken. Haven’t asked him about the drum hour yet. thanks.

I’d advise you to avoid that one with the broken LCD. There are so many used DVX100’s and 100A’s floating around you shouldn’t have any problem finding a good one. A broken LCD is an essential and potentially costly fix and possibly indicative of heavy use or abuse that may extend to other areas of the camera.

IMHO light use over a year or two is 50-100 drum hours. Heavy use is 250+. But if well taken care of: well cleaned and stored with the same tape type used every time, heavy drum use is not always a deal breaker.

Sure- you can ask them to send you a still. The camera has an odometer for drum hours. Otherwise everyone would just lie. 🙂

I forgot to ask, where is the odometer located on the DVX 100? I don’t want to look like a newbee when examining the camcorder. Thanks 🙂
