    Media generation that is
streams of feathery light is what I really want to know about.
the kind that will follow a motion path, a ring of light coming from a floor, etc., etc.
extruding 2d objects is something else I’m a bit week with.
a book would be the best for me, so I have a desk reference.
web tut’s are good too, if you happen to know of any.
the main thing is that I don’t want a book that “takes you from a begginer to a pro” and then hints around at making some good stuff in the last chapter.
I know how to use all the tools in ae already.
I just wanna know some better ways of using those tools so I can get right at what I want.
    thanks

sounds like you’re in need of one of the new keyboards with the F89 button. works similiar to previously mentioned ‘Make It Look Great’ plug in.

if you’re looking for a book, the chris + trish meyer books are excellent.

and streams of feathery lights can be achieved with an experimental combination of moving mattes, overlays and blurs.

Yes you can achieve all these things and more with a little dose of something called PRACTISE!

what the guys have said is true, if a tad sarcastic. Although I’ve never looked back since buying the ‘Make things look Great’ plugin. 🙂

Best advice is check out all the tutorials here at the Cow, everything you asked about is covered by those.

yeah i got the meyers’ books a last year.
sorry that I’m not as cool as you.
I guess I’ll just give up and go cry for a while.
Anyway, thanks for the advise about the moving matte stuff.
I’ll play around when I get some time.
Oh and where can I get this ‘make it look great’ plugin?
I’ve been looking for it and can’t find it.
Maybe you could help me find a ‘make me sound like less of an idiot while asking for advise on a forum’ plugin.

    Thanks.
I’ll just aimlessly try stuff untill I get what I want instead of trying to learn practical techniques.

    Thanks.
It’s nice to get a response from a civilized person.

my comment was tounge in cheek, not intended to be offensive, so my apologies if it was taken as such.

“I’ll just aimlessly try stuff untill I get what I want instead of trying to learn practical techniques.”

that’s exactly, it, nail on the head. the amount of time i have spent experimenting, trying new things etc. far outweighs the time i have spent learning ‘practical techniques.’

if you’ve already been through the meyer books, then you’ve presumably got a solid grasp of the program.

from there, my advice is to experiment. otherwise known as wasting time.

it can often help experimenting if you’re being paid, or at least someone is asking for something… it can give you a bit more focus.

otherwise, if you’re wanting to know how to do a specific effect on the forum, post a link/frame grab and ask for specific advice…

Yeah I get what you’re saying.
And I wasn’t offended, just returning the flavor.
even the title of the post was to get attention, not really call it unreachable magic.
I do experiment, but I’m stuck making dry as sand commercials for small businesses and want to change that.
I’m too busy to play for more than an hour or two here and there and just wanna cut to the chase.
clients do like some off the cuff original stuff, but usually are asking for stuff they’ve seen.
some of the older aged clients don’t want anything past the style of the 80’s
I’m not beyond experimenting either, just because I say I want to know how to do a very specific thing.
the meyers books were a great start and showed a lot of practical techniques.
The thing is though is that this is art and as such I’d like to know should I use charcol or pastle so to speak to get a certain look.
If I can reach my goals in a month rather than a year by seeing how people manage to do certain things in a certain way, I do some other new and interesting stuff.
I was asking for an arrow sign.
I already do this stuff seven days a week while skinning my teeth to catch deadlines.
I’m the script writer, videographer, set designer, editor, concept designer, blah, blah, blah.
thank god I have an audio engineer or I’d do that too.
anyway, as soon as you said mattes and blurs, I could see what direction to take, so thanks for the great advise.
I tried some things there and moved some mattes through 3d space and started to see how to work the feathery light angle.
it looked like crap, but in the right direction for the first go.
    So, thanks.
try not to make people feel stupid though
