  • Wacom tablet problem w/ FCP 5.0.4 + Question

Posted by Ron James on June 19, 2006 at 8:03 pm

OS 10.4.6, QT 7.1, latest Wacom driver

Can anyone with a Wacom tablet checkt this out and see if they get the same behaviour…

I was using an Intuos 6×8 on a Dual 2.7 G5 and the tablet worked well for most functions, with the exception of some hiccups here and there.

The most annoying thing, though, was an inability to use the shuttle control in the Canvas. The scrub dial works fine, but whenever I tried to use the shuttle slider, FCP would sort of freeze up for about a minute. I say sort of, because the cursor would still move around the screen, but you couldn’t do anything else in any window. any other clicks, etc, would hold off and execute all at once about a minute later. And, from that point on, FCP would not be a little sludgy and slow to respond. This happened everytime. The only way to get FCP back to normal was to quit and relaunch.

I really hope this is not a common problem. I’d love to get one for myself.

ONE QUESTION TO WACOM USERS: Does anyone find the 6×8 too large? I like to set my mouse to move lightning speed b/c I don’t like to move my arm too much. I found the 6×8 to be a little too large, even with a dual monitor setup, b/c I found myself having to wave my arm around too much. Does anyone use a 4×5 size? Do you find it too small? Any advice is much appreciated.

Works fine here. Been using Wacom for almost 8 years now from Media 100 to FCP and I don’t have any issues specific to the tablet.

We run the 9×12 in one room and the 6×8 in the other. I like them both.

Thanks a lot for the reply, Walter. I wonder what the problem could be? Any ideas? Could it be a graphics card issue? I’m not at that particular workstation at the moment, so I’m not sure what card that G5 has, but whatever came installed on the dual 2.7’s.

Have you tried a 4×5 size? I guess it all comes down to personal preference. Or maybe I just haven’t used the 6×8 enough yet.

    Thanks,

    Ron

The issues re wacom and shuttle, freezes of the viewer or canvas while fast forward or backwards are fixed in vers 5.1 (the universal).
so what you are seeing is real and a common bug that now has been fixed.
I’m running 5.1 and my wacom now has no issus at all.
BTW that was the only reason I updated as I’m still on a G4 but 5.1 ist working flawlessly here.

Ah, thanks! This is good to know. Going to order one up for myself right now. What size do you use, btw, Cofe? Do have any advice regarding size? I’ll be using a 20″ main monitor and a 17″ 2nd screen for my browser.

Wow, never heard that one. We never saw that in either of our FCP systems running FCP 3, 4 or 5.

    Walter
Check the release notes for 5.1
Page 4 and 6 of the Late braking news under help.
The freeze of viewer and canvas weren’t soley related to wacom but happened with it too.
    Anyway all solved now.
Only thing you’ll notice is when having the pen over the tablet your fast forward or reverse will get slightly stuttery but returns to normal whe moving the pen away from the tablet. No big drama.
Don’t know why you didn’t see it?? I had since version 5 but never in 1-4.

I use the new graphire4 4×5 with the build in scroll wheel on the tablet itself (very cheap too)
This size is all you need for point and click operation. Maybe you need somthing bigger for serious drawing applications? I have 2 monitors and even set the working area on the tablet a bit smaller then the whole tablet to move small distances. Once you got the hang of it you don’t touch a mouse again and any strain in your hands is history.
I can’t live without the scroll wheel anymore because so many functions are supported to use the scroll wheel in FCP.
Jog in viewer-canvas/timeline scroll up-down/left right//parameter dials for effects//browser window scroll etc. etc.
    Cheers
    Cofe

Have you tried remapping the active area of the tablet so that it scrolls at a speed you’re happy with?

We run a 23″ and 17″ monitor in one suite and a 20″ and 17″ in the second. About to install two 24″ monitors in the main suite. I find the 9×12 is a good size to manage all that real estate, especially in After Effects when trying to go into a very small area without having to constantly scale up and down the images. Also I do a lot of painting in Photoshop so at least for me, the 9×12 and 6×8 are great sizes to fit their real estate. With smaller or single screens, really any size will work that you’re comfortable with.

Nope never saw it. We don’t use the jog / shuttle in the viewer / canvas that much anyway as we run the Bella Pro keyboard which has a jog / shuttle wheel built in. It’s more reponsive than using the Viewer / Canvas controls.
