My vote is for extreme slow-fast-slow-reverse-fast-forward speed-ramping, particularly of anything that rotates. Like somebody is just shuttling tape live.

My runner-up is unmotivated use of trapcode 3-d stroke.

Digitally zooming into/out of people’s faces at like 500% mag is the new “page turn” transition.

Freeze-framing someone for their name-super while cutting them out of their background is the new “lens flair”.

Don’t get me wrong – I try hard not to dump on another’s creativity – but let’s just say I’ve stopped watching HGTV… permanently.

Absolutely the HUGEST pet peeve of 2007 is being distracted during a television program when the network keys-over the entire bottom-right of the screen with some giant, live-action animation promoting the date/time of some other program I have no intention of watching.

    Amen!!!!!

I don’t ever watch a program that is promoted that way, and usually don’t even finish watching the one the promo came in over. My way of boycotting the concept, not that it accomplishes anything.

Actually, I still believe in the concept that effects are supposed to be transparent, in other used to fix a problem, not distract from the video, so any unmotivated effect bothers me.

    [Charlie King] “unmotivated effect”

Unmotivated Effect. That just became the phrase of the day. So many connotations.

Bad effects I myself was guilty of this year:
    – Avid’s own PlasmaWipe “Center Ocean”
    – Avid’s own PlasmaWipe “Techno TV noise”
    – a box wipe

Great effects used this year (great like Charlie sez – because they went unnoticed)
    – Boris’s fake rain
    – Boris’s Wire Remover
    – Avid’s Timewarp – Fluidfilm progressive (to fake 24p)
    – Absolutely anything from 55mm

I need to print some “Unmotivated Effects” T-shirts and keep a stack of ’em in the edit bay. When all the interns-turned-producers ask for “film scratches” on 30i miniDV interview footage, they get a shirt.

… and another vote for the “freeze frame and cut the background out from them” (Usually with a color tone effect thrown in for good measure)

It was cool the first time I saw it… and still cool the 30th, but I’m ready to steal a new idea now for a transition now.

(Maybe I’ll go back to the lens flares.) 😉

I vote for the superimposed live action advertisement. Networks know that most people who watch a lot of tv skip commercials – well now we are going to start skipping the programs and just spending all of our time watching DVDs.

Rather than a writer’s strike, maybe what the tv industry needs is a viewer’s strike.

No offense to COW members who work on these shows – it’s not your fault networks do crazy things.

You have to remember that network people have no creativity. Keep in mind I mean any creativity, be it good or bad. So someone creative designer had to come up with the concept at one time or another. As I stated earlier, I jut turn off the show I am watching and set my mind to not watch the one being promoted.
There are enough distractions to ruin a good program (is that an oxymoron? good program on network tv?) without running promos during the programs.

I wish we could come up with a good national boycott to all programs that run promos during the programs.

Maybe we can petition for a removal of the “pop up promo”? Especially the ones with sound?!! Uggghhh, who ever thought that was a good idea and implemented it should be drug out into the street, slapped, fired, then slapped again.

    As far as effects go:
    Glow
    Glow
    Glow
FCP’s default Find Edges effect slapped on footage by itslef. (I only saw it twice, but I shouldn’t have seen it even once)
    oh and Glow
    …did I say Glow yet?
