VoiceOver Tool – No headphones sound

Put on your reading glasses! You did not read and comprehend what I wrote. What I said, that if the tool does not offer complete functionality then the tool is of dubious function. I went back into the manual and the software does offer the functionality that is needed, but somehow my system configuration is somehow not responding as it sure. First, in order to get anything through the headphones, the “Built In Line Output” needs to be selected from the Audio submenu.
It is VERY insulting that you use the term “operator error.” Just because you get your picture on the website does not give you the right to insult others with your obvious elitist attitude. Using the term “operator error” is a cop out just to make yourself feel important….just as you in an earlier made the “factual error” of not knowing about the “headphone toggle” switch in the menu…
You know NOTHING, buddy, about the TV news business and workflows go on. Soundtrack Pro is too cumbersome. It’s like trying to kill a gnat with a cannon.
I WILL get the answer to the problem and will post it.

You should read my profile. I spent 5 years at a little news organization called CNN. Was even nominated for and won some national awards there. It was a fun place to work.

On our Kona based system we can listen to the output via the AJA Kona board which is connected to a Mackie 1202. I have my headphones plugged into that board and that’s how I listen to VO’s as they are recorded.

If it’s too cumbersome to hit the REC button in SoundTrack Pro, you can use GarageBand or if you really want to go completely simple, use Quicktime Pro. We do this a lot. Just launch Quicktime, select New Audio Recording, and go. This is what I use the most here.

I didn’t answer that particular question Ivars as I had thought it was self evident and instead tried to help you with what seemed to be the real crux of your question (that being how to hear your own voice through the headphones whilst recording the VO). My heartfelt apologies that my help was not to your satisfaction, I shall never forgive myself …
Still I guess what may seem self evident to me is not necessarily so to you so here goes nothing:
Its a control to vary the headphone volume. Yes, obviously the same could be achieved using the system volume controls, or via an outboard mixer, but Apple also put a control directly in the VO Tool interface to allow user a quick and easy means to adjust the tool specific headphone volume wthout affecting the overall system level.
This control/function, as with many, is of course entirely useless to some users and simultaneously invaluable to others. Is there perhaps any other tools that you would have Apple remove because you don’t personally use them?

We have a Kona Lhe and do the same as Walter does. Card connected to a mixer that allows us to hear it all. If you are doing pro projects you should have a card and a mixer Ivars.

Ivars’ interest here is quite specific to the News field and as such his best solution is not necessarily a studio based one. For field recording the tower + I/O card + mixer option is not so suitable .. and he’s also noted that he is already using such a solution where applicable. The software just doesn’t do quite what he wants. Hopefully he will submit his feedback (politely) to Apple, and they will listen and enhance the VO tool accordingly. Heck, he may have been a bit if a jerk in the manner he comported himself in this thread but everyone has a bad day and its too easy for these things to spin out of control… the basic feature he’s looking for would be a useful one to many.
