VoiceOver Tool – No headphones sound
Posted by Ivars Bezdechi on May 2, 2009 at 9:15 amI use Final Cut Pro 6.0.5 for daily television news use.
I record voiceovers with the VoiceOver tool. I have no problem using the tool but I cannot hear my self when I record the voice. Any Ideas? I see the peak meter move while I am recording my voice and the voice is in the clip and sounds super.
The microphone is a standard Shure microphone which is plugged into a M-Audio Audio Buddy Interface. That is connected to the line in jack in the back of the computer.
The headphones are connected to the output jack of the unit and the settings on the audio/video is on built in output. I have also tried to change the settings but nothing changes.

May 2, 2009 at 2:15 pmHi Ivars
What you are experiencing is the normal functionality of FCP’s Voice Over Tool … it is just the way it works.
If you need to be able to hear a mix of timeline audio together with talent voice then you might want to consider using a recording interface with direct support for such a feature, something like a SoundDevices USBPre, or perhaps the more affordable M-Audio FastTrack USB.
Hope it helps

May 2, 2009 at 6:12 pmThere’s a toggle switch in there to monitor the sound during recording. By default this is off because you would get feedback if you are using speakers.
Just toggle that switch on and you’ll hear yourself in the headphones provided you have the audio output of your system set wherever you’re monitoring your headphones.

Sorry just looked at it again, It’s the headphone volume I was thinking of.
Look at your System Prefs > Sound > Audio Output. Make sure it’s set to whatever you’re feeding to your headphones.

as Walter’s noted, the headphone volume slider is there to allow you to adjust the timeline audio level to the headphones (it is automatically assumed you are using headphones else you’d get feedback through the mic / speaker loop); the toggle there is for sound cues ie the beeps that alert you as you approach the beginning and end of the marked recording range.
there’s currently no way directly in FCP to monitor both the mic audio and timeline audio simulatneously, for that you would need an appropriately configured outboard mixer, or as noted, an audio interface that provides such a function.
hope that explains it better

May 3, 2009 at 5:13 amThen the whole application is a piece of software junk. And this is the opinion of a professional voiceover artist.
Again, but that doesn’t answer the question why there is a whole function of “headphone volume” within the application.
I do use a recording interface, but it should not be necessary.
I think I’m going to investigate this further directly with Apple.
Thanks again for your contribution!

May 3, 2009 at 6:53 amIvars, you are of course entitled to your opinion but nonetheless its quite a jump between the VO Tool not working as you would prefer for your professional VO artist needs, and the entire non-linear video editing application being junk. I personally use the SoundDevices USBPre for field use in recording voice tracks for my edits. In a studio based environment I use professional audio recording hardware and software.
For what its worth, I would like the ability to monitor incoming talent voice mixed with timeline audio (and to control that mix) in the VO tool, and have long since requested it using Apple’s Feedback system … but that said, there are many other video editing based functions, features and fixes I’d like to see first.
Best

Please answer this question…
You can offer the solution you have offered, and it is valid, but you have not answered/obfuscated the basic question?
Then WHY is there a headphone regulation toggle? Is it just to make the dialog box more pretty? Make you more impressive to others who don’t know who are watching over your shoulder? Come’on now, buddy….use your head!
While I appreciate your reply to the original query, something I already know, obviously you don’t know the answer to the direct question on the functionality of this preset.
Your answer is a little like when I went to my local Apple store to try get a solution why the wireless card on my MacPro tower was dropping the connection to my network all the time. The “greeter” to the Apple tech bar kept convincing me that it was not about the card, but “there are little tiny wires” inside of the computer that are not connecting and I need to take the behemoth to be looked at on the spot. He didn’t really know what he was talking about, but he felt that he needed to “fill the air” to say “something.”
Again, thanks for your input…which was a solution I already knew and am using…but shouldn’t have to if the software has the functionality already installed to be used.
Take care…

Because it does not record a voice over the way you like, the entire Non Linear editing software is a piece of junk? that’s a HUGE stretch.
The VO Tool does work.
The Headphones do give you sound so long as your System Prefs for sound are set up correctly.
At this point I can tell you there is operator error on your part, most likely the System Prefs are not set up to play audio back out through your audio monitor you’re using.
And I’m curious, if you’re a voice over professional, why aren’t you using SoundTrack Pro to record your VO’s? That’s an audio production tool.
