Adding to my previous question advice needed please

VOB to FCP to Output Please

the problems l am having is the footage which l filmed was from 2 camera’s, either HDV1080i Sony FX1 or Panasonic HDV 1080i full size camera. all NTSC Cameras

the editing time line l am unsure of???

the Company that sent me the DVD’s was USA Company HDNet if any help

the DVD’s l have already have had TS.VOB files made and are
on my Hard drive but l also have the DVD’s as well for use.

the information of VOB files are

originally filmed on Sony HDV-FX1 1080i
VOB stream information, Original Edit time line UNSURE

    Video
    224 MPEG-2, 720×480, 4;3 29.97fps 8.82Mbs, upper field first

    Audio
    128ACS 2/0, 48KHz, 384Kbs

originally filmed on Panasonic HDV1080i Full size camera
VOB stream information, Original edit time line UNSURE

    video
    224 MPEG-2, 720×480, 4;3 29.97fps 4.62Kbs upper field first

    Audio
    Audio
    128ACS 2/0, 48KHz, 256Kbs

near all the VOB files are this way in VOB stream information give or take a few frames Differences and sizes

So from what l have available to use at this stage is only the DVD’s and the VOB files l have already made from the DVD’s , from this l want to make a show reels of the the Footage and also have available web links to this footage on my web site, send via in the internet if need be. Be able to send as DVD (if quality will be OK)

    Questions.

    1. l have tired the Proress 422 hq and also normal ( is this the best quality l will get from VOB files? and Prores HQ l think would be the best? but still get some interlacing in the time line l have tried 8 and 10Bit uncompressed not that good., Whats the best way out of the VOB file for me for my use and finished edit compression once l have edited.

1a Whats the best FCP7 Time line setting to work in with all of this.

1b Whats the best web format to put the finished Edit into for a web link and use on my web site???

    2. whats the best format to be able to send a 3 to 4 minute clip via email ( after edit)

    4. how do l get ride the interlacing?

    5. Audio tells me 2 channels IS there a way to get either the VO or Nat sound only from the VOB file

6 is it bad to edit with the VOB straight in to FCP 7?

    thanks for your time guys

sorry about long question better said in one go

    Hi Paul,
Open the clips with MPGStreamclip and export as QT Movie.
Set Prores and keep the rest of the setting as in the very VOBs (size, field order, time-base).
    Set the audio Uncompressed.

    Thanks Mate

will do that, can l ask though as an output compression output from FCP whats the best for Web site video and the best for email sending of the show reels. Flash for Web and MPeg-4 for email or file transfer???????????

would the edit time line in FCP be also Prores HQ or normal does it matter same question applies to the VOB conversion HQ or normal Prores is there a big difference? whats the best.

can l get the Vo and Nat sound to be 2 channels l only want the Nat if possible????

    thanks Paul

You don’t need HQ. Use ProRes 422 or even ProRes LT may be good enough. Use that setting for the timeline. Using a higher level of ProRes won’t improve video coming off an SD DVD. That’s why ProRes LT might work. If you have 2 separate channels of audio you can unlink them and delete the one you don’t need. If the VO & dialog are mixed then you can’t separate them.

I don’t know if you know this but all the info about camera’s and HD formats is now pretty irrelevant to you (and Panasonic have never made an HDV camera as far as I know). It seems that what you have been given are DVDs of the footage.

DVDs are not HD. So unless you can get the original rushes you are stuck with compressed standard def down-converts of everything. Not great images to work with (although it is common for showreels to be made this way so not all hope is lost).

You need to use an application such as Mpeg Streamclip to make Standard Definition ProRes 422 QuickTimes of the DVDs. This is the preferred codec for FCP editing as it is relatively small, easy to work with and of good visual quality.

[paul roubicek] “Panasonic use HDV1080i format have been using it since 2003”

Panasonic has NEVER made or used HDV format. Don’t know where you get your info from.

The mid-sized tapes are Panasonic’s own DVCProHD format. They need a different deck for playback so it’s important to know that distinction (they also are of better quality – HDV is 25Mb/s where DVCPro can near 100Mb/s – that can be a big difference in post production, especially as the BBC don’t accept HDV as broadcast quality whereas DVCProHD is)

As for delivery I would go with a h.264 QuickTime or an iPod friendly .mp4.
