I recently purchased a Sony Z5U and it connects great to my Dell XPS running Win XP. However, I’m trying to connect it to my Gateway notebook computer running Vista 64, via PC card for firewire by Dynex. Older, cheaper cameras work (and I can record direct from camera to hard drive skipping the tape). But when I disconnect the firewire cable from an old/cheap camera that works to my new Z5U, Vista does not recognize that anything is connected at all. Unplug it and plug the cable back into my old cheapy, and Vista bongs and asks what I’d like to do with this video device.

I called Sony and got a “specialist” who said it’s a windows Vista 64 bit problem, that Microsoft didn’t put out the necessary 64 bit HDV drivers.

Anyone run into and resolve similar problems?

You may want to try the following:

Temporarily disable any firewalls running on your PC, including Windows own.

If that does not work, you can try the following which also works for Windows 7

1- Click the Start Button, type devmgmt.msc in the “Start Search” box and press Enter.
2- Expand the “IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers” node in the device tree on the right hand pane
3- Right click the host controller node select “Update driver software …”
4- Select “Browse my computer for driver software”
5- Select “let me pick from a list of device driver on my computer …” and Check the box before “Show compatible hardware”.
    6. Choose the second option—1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy), and click next to update the driver.
    7. Restart the PC and see if the camera is recognised.
