Vignette Effect?
Posted by Thomas on August 29, 2006 at 7:06 pmIs there an easy way to do the vignette effect in FCP or is there a free plug-in for this?
I’ve tried the 4-point-garbage-matte (invert) on a black video generator clip ontop and placed the clip ontop of my footage but it doesn’t seem to look as good as the telecine vignette effect. Especially, when I export it to a web clip the vignette starts to look all differnt. I know that there are some plug-ins you can buy but I find them extremely expensive if I just want to use this effect.Any suggestions?

August 29, 2006 at 7:11 pmVideo Filters > Matte > Mask Shape: Shape>Oval.
Also add: Mask Feather
Adjust the size of the “oval” and the softness of the “feather”.
Done.

August 29, 2006 at 7:19 pmI’ve already tried that and it works but the only problem is that you can’t control the opacity of the vignette.
Expecially, if you want your vignettes to have a subtle look. Thanks for the info, though.

Shape generator (where the text generators are) select oval/circle. Set it to correct size and maximum (or slightly less) softness.
Place it on V1 and move your video up to V2. Change the composite mode on V2 clip to ‘travel matte – luma’ .
I find this is a softer effect than Matte’s method, as you can feather the edges more – just a personal preference, Matte.
If you’re losing the effect when you transfer for the web, it’s probably because a good vignette is quite subtle, and subtle effects get lost in compression. I suggest you ‘overdo’ the effect a bit then when you compress it, you should see it better.

August 29, 2006 at 7:28 pmShould also find it easier to mess with the ‘opacity’ with this method. Used to use Magic Bullet Misfire vignette, but now I don’t bother – this is so much quicker for renders…

August 29, 2006 at 9:42 pmSorry – didn’t say. You can also change the composite mode by control- or right-clicking on the V2 clip and selecting it there. Quicker.

August 30, 2006 at 5:39 pmThe vignette’s nice, similat in look to above method, but neater being a filter.
That Face Light though, the other free one, is great. What a useful little filter for all sorts of uses. Looks nicer than a couple of spotlight filters I have.

August 31, 2006 at 4:19 pmI’ve created a PSD tga file of darkened edges. Created a large oval w/marquee tool. Feathered 30 pixels. Invert selection. Fill with black. Save as a targa w/alpha channel.
I can then place the still over entire sequence, use Darken Composite mode and set opacity to 52%. Simpler than appying plugin to individual clips.
