Viewing XDCam EX1 footage w/browser on both PC and Mac
Help! We edit with FCP and are trying to successfully save a backup of my raw EX1 footage on an external 7200rpm hard-drive formatted NTFS for PC (client’s platform) from my Mac. I can ‘see’ the drive when mounted, but even though we have reformatted the drive from the PC with which it will live and opened up the ‘permissions’ to allow all to read and write, I still can’t save the footage to the drive. Both the client and I need to review the raw footage, but we’re on different platforms and I am so hoping the EX1 browser will allow us to easily to this… Theoretically, it should work beautifully. Am I hoping for too much? Help!

FAT32 would actually work on both platforms. SxS cards are FAT32 so if you’re just copying the BPAV over FAT32 would work.
If you’re on an Intel Mac you can install Windows with Parallels or VMWare Fusion.
The alternative is that there are some 3rd party Mac utilities that may allow you to write to NTFS on Mac.
I believe NTFS is read only on the Mac.

You have two options:
1. Format the shared drive in FAT32 binary. This is the only format that will allow both Windows and Mac computers to read and write to the same drive without buying any extra software. FAT32 is also the the format of the SxS Pro memory cards. You’ll notice that long clips on the cards are split into 4 Gbyte chunks. This is the file size limit of FAT32 formatting. The same holds true for the FAT32 formatted hard drive. If you want to share the EX files between platforms you need use the Sony clip browser on the Mac to manually split the files into 4 Gbyte pieces and put them on the shared drive for use with a Windows machine.
2. The easier way to share the files is to format your shared drive in Mac OS Extended. Then buy the program MacDrive for Windows. Put the software on the Windows machine and this will allow the client to connect any Mac formatted hard drive and be used by their computer.
