  • Viewing playhead frame while slip editing

    Hello,

I recently purchased Final Cut Studio 3 and am currently going through the first Apple Pro Training book for FCP – interesting stuff, and I am actually learning the basics of editing as I go.

But when doing some of the exercises, I wanted to make an adjustment where I would slip edit a clip on the timeline so that a certain action is synced to a certain point in music.

I thought that I would do this by placing the playhead on the right place in the music and then slipping the video clip.

But is there any way the view the playhead frame while slipping? The canvas always seems to show the In and Out points, which is sometimes useful but not in this case.

I always highlight the clip add a marker at the frame that is supposed to hit on the beat. Then I move my playhead to the beat that it’s supposed to hit and use the slip tool. This way, you can line the marker up with the playhead.

Oh, right. I actually haven’t even gotten to the clip markers in the book yet (only Timeline).

But I tried this and you can’t see the marker moving while you are slipping. You only see the new placement after you release the mouse.

So it is not ideal. (Or maybe I am missing an option and need to read all the tutorials first 🙂

The clip marker does show up fine when moving a clip though, and it can be snapped to the playhead so there it works nicely. But after that both ends need to be adjusted (and it might interfere with neighboring clips).

Another way would be to use razor blade in the video where the desired action is, then remove either half of the clip, move the remaining clip aligning the cut point to the beat, and expand the clip to fill.

But simply seeing the playhead location frame while slipping would be way more simple. Option for that would probably be super easy to implement as well.

I found out that a reasonable workaround is having a marker in the audio clip where I want to have the action.

Then starting the slip from the wanted point in video it snaps to the marker in audio.

Even so, it seems that the markers in the slipped video do not for some reason snap – only the point where you start slipping does.

The FCP7 Pro Training book page 218 suggests that they would snap, but I feel that it is only the starting point of slip that matters, not the markers.
