The footage for a show I’m cutting next week hasn’t been shot yet. I’m trying to work with the DP to make some decisions. He wants the recording format to be DVCProHD 720p24n, which is native 23.98 fps, 16×9 (1280×720).
I just read – “that 23.98 doesn’t play out via firewire…only 29.97 will. Even DV. The only way to stream a DV signal out via firewire is at 29.97fps. You can see if you can choose that option in the VIEW>VIDEO PLAYBACK option, as I choose DVCPRO HD 720p 59.94 8-bit to view my 720p 23.98 footage. See if that works.”
The problem is- the footage will recorded to a drive and Logged and Transfered to a Firewire drive. If using DVCPRO HD 720p 59.94 8-bit to view my 720p 23.98 footage doesn’t work, do I have to re-export everything at 29.97? And if I do that will there be a loss in quality or look? Should I just tell the DP to record at 29.97?

That is the option you use when you have a capture card too…DVCPRO HD 720p 59.94. Because that is the compressor type of the 720p format. That should work fine. With a capture card you CAN use the 23.98 option, but that is all flickery and really unwatchable. No one can look at that for long. Use the DVCPRO HD 720p 59.94 8-bit option.

    But it does work.

    No.
