  • video tearing in FCP 6.0.1 – MacBook Pro 17″

    Here’s the machine:
    MacBook Pro 17-in Hi-Res WideS
    2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM – 2x1GB
    160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200
    SuperDrive 8X
All FCP updates and MacBook Pro udates installed.

I’m editing footage shot on at 720/24pn on a HPX500 and transferred to an external hard drive. All of the captured files play fine in the Quicktime viewer – the problem is FCP: there’s a persistant horizontal tearing in all the footage when played back in the Viewer or Canvas.

There have been a few peeps on other forums from others with the same problem – could it be the video card? Anyone else with a new MacBook Pro 17″ machine having this problem?

    Any solutions?

    There’s horizontal tearing

I’m guessing you’re looking at this on your computer. You need to view this footage on an external monitor. my guess is the tearing is not there, it’s just an artifact in the Viewer / Canvas.

As has been noted on this very forum, probably hundreds of times, the Viewer and Canvas in Final Cut Pro are degraded images to allow for more realtime performance. It is expected when you work with Final Cut Pro that you have an external video display connected to your system. This display will show you the true video output and quality of your project.

you find more info here. I think it’s not acceptable. Sure, you can’t judge color etc. on a MBP display but you should be able to see if you have corrupted frames at least. By the way, that’s the first mbp that has this problem and I am hoping this issue will be fixed fast….

I should have mentioned – the tearing is there when I view it on an external monitor as well.

    Any ideas?

I have the same problem and have talked with people at the apple store and through applecare.

It seems to be a universal problem with the high end video card apple just started using, the nvidian GeForce 8600M GT. I’m guessing you have in your computer also? I get the video tearing problem when using FCP and After Effects, so its not a problem isolated to FCP.

Just to follow up on this for anyone who’s interested… a rep for applecare said that he contacted the engineering group at apple. Their response was that they have been aware of the problem for some time and are trying to work on a solution.
