  • Video Quality is not as good as the original

Posted by Vicki Moroughan on December 5, 2005 at 2:03 am

When I capture video within Premiere Pro 1.5, the colors are no where near as vibrant as the original footage. I get a similar result when I transfer footage from my camera through MY DVD to a DVD. I use a Sony VAIO. Could the poor quality of the video be due to my video card, my encoders, or is there something I am doing wrong? Thank you, Vicki

Are you viewing your video on the computer monitor or on an external television monitor? For accurate color, you should always use the latter. Computer monitors vary widely in their color response, due to the monitors themselves (same problem with television monitors, which is why you should always calibrate them) and in how the video card handles color.

I have gone through the steps to calibrate my monitor. I don’t have a television hooked to my computer as an external monitor. Can you tell me how I would set that up? I do have a jack on the back of my computer that looks like a cable TV jack. Do I connect a coaxial cable from that to where cable would hook into my television? I called Sony awhile ago to see if they could help me hook up my television since I have Windows Media Edition, but the technician was not sure. I would like to see the footage on both my monitor and television if possible. If I recall correctly, don’t I need to change a setting in Premiere Pro 1.5 to watch on an external monitor?
Once I get an external monitor set up, then do I make color adjustments within Premiere Pro based on the external monitor? I would rather have an NTSC monitor, but not in the budget 🙂 Thank you very much, Vicki

Unless you’re in Europe or another PAL country, any television monitor you use is going to be an NTSC monitor. The difference is whether or not it’s “reference” quality. But any functional television monitor will work fine.

To preview live video from Premiere Pro, what you do is connect the FireWire cable on the computer to your DV camera/DV deck/DV converter (I use a Canopus ADVC-100 converter), and the television monitor to the DV device. (Caveat: most DV cameras can do this, as long as it’s in VCR mode, but there are a few that can’t.)

Then in Premiere, go to the Project menu > Project Settings > General, hit Playback Settings, and select the option to preview video on the DV device.
