I’m using FCP 5.04 on a G-5 with 1.8 dual processors. I have a strange problem that keeps reoccuring. Maybe someone can tell me what might be wrong.

All functions of FCP seem to work fine, but when I play my video out, I FREQUENTLY lose my audio and video output and get a flashing, pixalated pattern on my display. My firewire output goes through a Sony codec converter, then out to an analog deck and TV display. However, it doesn’t make any difference if I bypass the Sony codec converter and go directly out to a videocamera or other firewire component. It still occurs when I go direct. The problem is random but occurs frequently. If I hit my F-12 keys to refresh the AV devices the flickering stops, and when I hit the F-12 keys again the video and audio come back on and everything works fine… until the next time, which could be 5 seconds or 20 minutes. It happens if FCP is the only program running or if there are others running. I can find no identifiable pattern or predictor for this.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening, and what I could do to fix it?

    Thanks

    Kevin

THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”

Click the following link for instructions.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

    https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
    or
    https://pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue/

This is one FCP tip that has helped in solving hundreds of “odd” problems.

    Yeah,

I’ve trashed my FCP prefs so many times that it’s become second nature to do so. That has fixed some problems but it has had no effect on the flashing, pixalated screen problem. Thanks for the suggestion though.

    Change out the FireWire cable?

Suspect the converter or and/or its power supply?
