  • Video Game job – a question of size.

Posted by Godfrey Pye on March 7, 2006 at 3:23 pm

I’m about to edit a piece for a video game, the standard I’m told is the “US Video Game standard”.
It will begin with an animatic for which I’ll be given artwork.
Then it will move on to an edit with finished scenes provided by a CG house.
The ultimate frame size is to be 1280 x 720, apparently with square pixels.
This weird size is all new to me and I wonder if anyone can recommend:

    (a) what the dumbed-down equivilant settings are that I should work at in FCP ?
    (b) what size and format should I ask for jpegs of the artwork to come to me ?

    Thanks in advance.

That’s just standard 720p High Definition. There are presets for this in FCP. DVCPro HD 720 is one of the presets.

All your graphics should come in at least 1280×720 if you don’t need to do any zooms or moves on them. If you need to do moves, they need to be larger and with square pixels.

Do you know how you need to make your final delivery to the company? That is via tape, via quicktime movie, etc… and what are the specs on the final delivery?

Oh yeah, one more question, what’s the frame rate they want you to deliver? 59.94, 30, 24, 60, 29.97, etc……

in High Definition it’s not necessarily going to be 29.97. You need to ensure that all of your video is produced in the correct frame rate.

    Walter, you’re a good chap – I don’t care what they say.
You’ve told me what I need to know and more.
You’ve also asked some very pertinint questions to which I don’t know the answers yet, as I only got the brief last night.
However, I will now go ahead and ask these questions, and if I need to – and if I may, I’ll come back to you.
What I love about this forum is that you can risk making a fool of yourself by asking questions of which you are completely ignorant – yet everyone is usually very kind in response.
That’s you today – and boy were you quick!

    Many thanks again.
