The following is checked:
Safe RT
Play base layer only
Scrub high quality
Playback Video Quality = Low
Playback Frame Rate = Full
Multiclip Playback
Record to Tape = Full Quality

…. After I checked I switched the playback frame rate to “Half” and now it’s playing smoothly! Perhaps that was the problem. Will I need to switch any of these settings before exporting, or are they only relevant for editing?

Instead of “Half” set the playback frame rate to “Dynamic.” That way it will play at whatever the highest rate is that doesn’t drop frames.

And, the same thing applies to Playback Video Quality.

Make sense???

David, perhaps you can help me too!

1) I have Canon 7D footage that is already on a hard drive. I brought it into
a project in FCP. The footage is stuttering playing back. When I edit into the timeline
every shot needs rendering. Once rendered it plays back fine.

2) What is the proper way to bring media from a Canon 7D card into FCP? I’ll be
getting that today.

I wish I wasn’t back on this thread but I am…

I don’t know what changed – suddenly the dropped frames are worse than ever. I have even opened old projects, none of which used dslr footage or gave me problems with dropped frames before, and I can hardly play a couple seconds without issues. Same thing if I start a new project and drop one pro res clip on the timeline.

This G-drive belongs to my employer; when I take my laptop home, I work off a smaller Seagate external (also firewire) and then Final Cut doesn’t give me much trouble – so maybe it’s a problem with the new external drive or the way it’s formatted?
