video for web … NOT YouTube..
Posted by Gilles Gagnon on March 16, 2010 at 6:24 pmI’ve prepared a video to be delivered from a website. I’m not using Youtube in this case.
I read on this forum that Sony AVC mp4 should be used. I did and my 1 min 15 sec video is 24 MB. I’m afraid it’ll be too large to stream and will choke the visitor’s players.
Is there a better way? Am I doing it correctly?

March 17, 2010 at 1:22 amyou have a Helix or other streaming server? Otherwise, it won’t stream, it’s a download. MP4 on a bit-for-bit comparison outperforms WMV at higher bitrates, but WMV is streamable from most any ISP.

March 17, 2010 at 1:34 amI see… thanks Douglas. I guess it’s downloading then.
here’s my dilemma. the video will be on my host (1and1). I want to have the visitor watch this 1.25 minute video with “good” quality, at the best speed possible.
I’m confused by all the render options in Vegas. I tried WMV but issues with this is that
A)it was taking a long time for the vid to start in IE7
B) in Firefox, a plugin needs to be manually installed which means many will just leave and not install it.Which format should I use and what maximum file size should I aim at?
I’ve been scouring the posts, I’m not getting anywere…
Thanks!

March 17, 2010 at 7:39 amLike DSE said, It depends on your server upload bandwith and how many people may be streaming it at the same time. I would try a few render presets and experiment. That’s why people use You Tube and such, They convert anything you send them to a format that streams well, like .flv and .wmv. Hope this helps, Danny

March 17, 2010 at 11:20 amthanks guys,
I ended my frustration by using YouTube in the end. Not what I originally intended but since I couldn’t find an alternative, it will do.
Cheers,

March 17, 2010 at 12:55 pmWhy don’t you try Vimeo. You can take your piece and embed a link on your site and people will never know it’s coming from Vimeo. Here’s what I’ve done as an example and the quality is really nice. You can upload in HD as well. You can also resize your video to whatever you wish as Vimeo gives a choice when copying the embed code.

Yes, I have considered using Vimeo. the one reason I’ve been using YT is that it’s the most searched video repository. However, I am considering moving my videos to Vimeo.
Thanks again for your input.
