“Hello, I can’t seem to get AVI files and FLV files to work with sony vegas.”

Vegas has never handled FLV files.

“‘i have done the mistake of installing several codecs before not knowing what i was doing”

That was a BIG mistake, especially if it was a codec package.
These can overwrite the codecs that were installed by Vegas leaving with inferior ones.
Never install a codec unless you need it and then make sure to only install what you need and that it comes from a reputable site.
Ask here if you’re not sure about where to go to get a good one.

“‘is it possible for me to get it working again without having to format my computer ?”

    Maybe.
Try uninstalling all of them first.
If that’s not possible, try doing a System Restore to a point before you started installing them.
If none of that works, you may be looking at having to reinstall Windows.

As was pointed out, FLV files cannot be opened in Vegas.
But for those AVI files, where do you get them from?

AVI is just the container. You can put any video format into an avi file. Look for the free program: “mediainfo” to see what CODEC was used to create the file.

MKV is just another container. Here’s a link to more information on video containers than most of us will ever need:
