video craps out after about 5 minutes, anyone help?
Hi,
I’m new here, and I hope some people have had this same problem or can offer a few suggestions. I’m currently editing a 2 hour play, and when I drag the 2 files I am using down to the timeline, they play just fine until about 5 minutes, and then the picture locks up and I get a really nasty audio noise. I’ve tried using other video editing programs, and they all do the same thing. However, the actual file plays fine under Windows Media Player and doesn’t have the problem in Windows Movie Maker. Problem is, I don’t want to use Windows Movie Maker. 🙂 Really, I can’t, because it doesn’t allow multi-track editing. Any ideas? I’ve tried re-capturing the files, using different files, and they all do the same thing. Any ideas are appreciated.

Need some information to help here.
How did you capture these files? Are they DV AVIs? If not, what CODECs?

They are indeed DV AVI. I capture them using the Windows Movie Maker capture. Also, I forgot to mention that I am using an AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1gb RAM, 560gb HDD, and an nVidia FX 5500 graphics card. Shouldn’t be a hardware issue.

If you are using Premiere why aren’t you using Premiere’s capture?

I’m a beginner, it’s what I’m used to. When I plug in the firewire cord, it comes up. Capture is capture… I find they both yield the same results.

I would guess that your captures at in Type 1 AVI format, which Premiere spits out at 1Gb (=4min 52 secs approx).
Use Premiere or Scenalyzer Live for capture in Type 2, which removes this restriction.

Not necessarily so, What version of MM and what settings are you capturing to?

MM 2, and to DV AVI. I’ll try that Type 2 capture and see if it works. Thanks a lot!

There is no file limitation except for the OS on type1 video, these labels have been mucked up on the internet again, VFW(video for windows) known as AVI1 has a file limitation of 2gig , AVI2(direct show)has two types; type1 which is Audio/Video interleaved, type2 which has the streams separated, the DV on a camcorder’s tape is basically type1, NLEs based on VFW like Premiere split the audio/video when capturing and Mux it to return it to tape, NLEs like Ulead’s MediaStudioPro use Type1 basically just adding a wrapper to the captured video. Putting type1 into premiere just requires some rendering to be able to use it.

If you are capturing to the “digital device format(DV-AVI)” you should have no problem using the file in PremierePro, I recently showed some educators how to capture and trim in various NLEs and had a 1 hour TV-in-the-classroom DV-AVI file captuered in MM2 and used it in Ppro, AvidFreeDV, MSP7 and Vegas with no problems, I suspect that your files maybe corrupted somehow, are you using the NTFS file system? what are your computer specs?
