Video Conversion – Digi Beta to DVCAM to HDD?

I want to expand my video editing suite.

I use Adobe Premiere CS3 and usually I capture video using a Sony DVCAM DSR11 with Firewire.
The Betacam player I’m looking at is the Sony J3 Compact Player.

I’ve heard that Premiere Pro can’t handle Betacam directly, so I’m wondering if I hook the Sony J3 to the Sony DSR11 with a S-Video connector, press play on the J3, press record on the DSR11, would that work? Then capture into Premiere as I would normally.

I would only be capturing from Betacam, I wouldn’t be looking to record to Betacam. Ultimatly, footage from Betacam/Digi Beta tapes would be converted to DVD with Premiere/Encore CS3.

What other ways can you convert DigiBeta to DVCAM and/or my hard drive of my computer?
Any help would be great since I’m an audio buff, trying to expand into video.

    Many thanks,
    Clint

Get a capture card from AJA or Blackmagic. I use an AJA Xena LS card that easily captures material from my Sony BetaCam 2800 deck. The card can control the deck for batch captures, as well.

With these cards, too, you can output back to BetaCam SP if you need to.

A cheaper alternative is a Canopus box that would “convert” an analog signal to Firewire. But you’d have to manually control your source deck.

You could even, on a cheap budget, use an Intensity Pro and capture through component (no timecode), but if you are sinking money in that player, you’ll probably want SDI all the way through, and James made great recommendations.

Going through a DV converter or Deck, you will be recompressing and might as well shoot on DV CAM tapes.

    Cheers,

The reason we’re stuck on this machine is that we are in talks with a company that has unfortunately gone bankrupt, and as a result, they are selling off their equipment for very cheap. Under normal circumstances, we wouldn’t even think of spending such a large amount of money for our video editing suite, but since this opportunity has came along, I’m trying to find out if it will work for us.
