Video Card or Graphic Card
Ok, I realize I should know the answer to this but I do not. So, if someone would be kind enough to help me, I’d appreciate it.
I currently have a Dell XPS running CS5 and Sony Vegas 10. I would like to know what the easiest and/or simplest way is to have a preview monitor (or an output monitor showing the playback of my timeline/sequence). Can I do this by adding a third monitor via my graphics card or do I need to add a video card? The graphics card I currently have is a ATI Radeon HD5870. I do not have a video card installed.
Previously, I used an Matrox RTX2 system.

Hi Jan,
Yes, you can use a dual head graphics card, set the second monitor as extended in Windows, and it will appear in the list of full screen playback monitors in Premiere’s playback options.
Keep in mind that the ATI card will not be able to take advantage of the new Mercury Playback Engine that comes with Premiere CS5.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. I am currently running two monitors but would actually like to have a third –two to stretch the Premiere workspace and the third to see the output. The back of my card has a HDMI output but according to Dell, this will only work if I use the “Display Port” port (which the cabling is expensive for) and one DVI and one HDMI (totaling three). My question is, will I then in Premiere have the option of choosing which of my three monitors functions as the output monitor? Has anyone done this successfully??
What is your suggestion for a different video card? Do you have one that can do the three monitors??

As long as a monitor is set as extended, it should show up in your Premiere playback settings. If you have several extended monitors, you will then have a list to choose from.

You said you previously had the Matrox RT.X2, so you should be familiar with how that allowed you to connect an actual VIDEO DISPLAY for previewing SD or HD output, rather than a “computer display”, which to me just is not the same output quality.
Matrox currently has the MXO2 Mini which would provide the output you are looking for with CS5. Output also available from BlackMagic Intensity Pro. Matrox will not work with your Vegas 10 though, not sure on BlackMagic support.
As pointed out already, you really should be looking at a proper nVidia display card for CS5 to get some real editing performance, otherwise you are missing out on the Mercury Playback benefits.
