looking to build a second system strictly for video editing using Vegas (HD and DV editing), and would like to know which video card and processor to go with.

    cpu … quad core 6600 or 9400?
    video card .. radeon 4870 512MB or radeon 4850 1GB OR 4350HD 512MB.

are the 4870 and 4850 overkill for video editing in vegas? will the 4350HD be sufficient? does vegas or any other video editing app require cpu power as opposed to gpu?

currently i have a quad 6600, ati radeon 4870 1gb, 4GB RAM, asus p5q, 500 GB SATA WD drive, and Vista 64 Ultimate running Vegas 8 PRO and it flys. but would like to know if my video card is overkill as the price difference from a 4850/4870 to a 4350 is almost $200CDN!

Vegas Pro will not take advantage of the GPU on your video card so I would definitely go with the cheaper one unless you use After Effects CS4 or Boris RED/BLUE or some other application that can take advantage of the GPU. For Vegas Pro alone, it’s overkill.

    thanks for the input John.

is this the same for Pinnacle Studio 12? or does that require GPU power… any idea on that?

so it’s down to the choice between quad core q6600 and radeon 4850 512MB video card OR i7 920 and radeon 4670 512MB. price wise almost the same… should i go with the i7 combo?

I believe Pinnacle uses the GPU for rendering Hollywood FX and stuff. They’ve been doing that since version 7 or 8.

Definitely go with the i7. It will give you more bang-for-the-buck for video editing; especially with Vegas.
