My laptop stopped opening Vegas12 veg files after many days working a project. I got home from traveling and started using Vegas12 on my PC and all seemed to work….. for a couple of days.

Now Vegas12 won’t open any existing Vegas12 veg files on my PC. It simply crashes and gives me a crash report screen to send to Vegas.

Anyone having these same problems? Frustrating…ARGGGG.

Im here wondering what specifically is causing you that issue,
You said you uninstalled and reinstalled it?

I would check the VST folder for some new files that it is scanning upon startup. I would not expect this to be a Sony Vegas problem, so I would be checking the file system and checking to see if the AntiVirus software is suddenly thinking Sony Vegas files are viral and preventing the execution. Do you have any extra drives plugged in that changed the drive letters assigned to your program or project files?

If you can find some more details about what is happening, it would help narrow this down some.

I worked with Roger on this problem this evening (because we are personal friends) and it turned out that after installing Vegas Pro 12.0, for some reason, Vegas Pro 10.0 was still his default application for .veg files and when he double-clicked on a veg file in the Vegas Pro 12.0 explorer, it tried to open it in Vegas Pro 10.0 and simply stopped and showed the Vegas has stopped working screen and then would go away.

We made Vegas Pro 12.0 the default application for .veg files and everything is working fine now. So this is something for people to check for in the future.

I’ve had this. I’ve had/have this WITH Nested Projects too. It was/is a complete mess to discover and then consider a way forward with a mix of Vegas versions.

Why have different Vegas versions operating? Here’s a few: Needing to keep up with the transition from 32bit to 64bit has meant for me and others to be able to access 3rd Party plugs; not needing to have GPU accel on or off; transition from nested projects occurring in earlier versions . . . . .

This has been the most challenging times for a Vegas User who is NOT an IT professional but a simple Film and Edit guy like myself, who’s got clients wanting re-edits and re-working on what could be up to 2 year finished work.

    It’s been tough. Really tough.

    Just my 2 pennies worth.

[Graham Bernard] “This has been the most challenging times for a Vegas User who is NOT an IT professional but a simple Film and Edit guy like myself, who’s got clients wanting re-edits and re-working on what could be up to 2 year finished work.”

WARNING!!! I’m getting on my soapbox. (can someone help me climb up? i’m getting too old for this…) 😉

This actually is not Sony’s fault. I blame the whole 32-bit/64-bit mess on Microsoft who should have stopped making 32-bit versions of their OS years ago when all processors were 64-bit enabled. I can’t believe there is a 32-bit version of Windows 8! IMHO, Vista should have been the last 32-bit OS and Windows 7 should have been 64-bit only. That would have gotten everyone converted over instead of prolonging the pain for more years. Now Windows 8 continues the 32/64-bit debacle.

I don’t wanna sound like an Apple fanboy but I know I will… (here it comes… you know what I’m about to say…) this is why the entire creative industry (video & music) is Mac based. I’ve been using a Mac every day for over a year now and Apple does not expect you to be an IT Professional or a Systems Administrator just to use their computer the way Microsoft does (which is exactly what you’re complaining about Grazie). I converted my whole family to Mac’s and they never call me for support anymore because they don’t need it. 99% of the time it just works.

I’ve found that it’s true when they say that Windows OS was made “by geeks for geeks” while the Mac OS was made “by creatives for creatives”. You know that I wrote about this last year when I first got my Mac and during setup all it asked for was my email address and password and the next thing I know I was reading my email. Imagine that! Why didn’t it ask me for my SMTP server address or IMAP vs POP3 like Windows does? Why didn’t it need to reboot like Windows does? How could it just work? This is impossible! It should take at least 4 wizard panels filled with questions I don’t know the answer to, in order to configure my email correctly! How can this be so easy??? lol.

Now that I’ve used both platforms every day for over a year it’s pretty obvious to me that Apple knows something that Microsoft doesn’t and personally, I am really tired of Windows and how much care and feeding it needs just to keep working. I’m not saying that I don’t have technical problems on the Mac, but I’m not expected to have technical knowledge just to use it. I’ve said this many times before, I only use Windows to run Vegas Pro. I use my Mac for everything else. I really wish Sony would port Vegas to the Mac like they did for Sound Forge so I can dump Windows once and for all.

So your “beef” Grazie is with Microsoft, not Sony.

(sorry everyone, now I’ll get down off my soapbox and you can all call me a fanboy and to stop drinking the KoolAid or whatever. I’ll be over here in the corner being productive getting work done on my Mac while you debug you Windows PC that worked yesterday but doesn’t work today for some reason. lol)

note: tongue planted firmly in cheek! (ok, i’m done with my rant.. nothing to see here… move along)

… seriously you can go now. Don’t worry about me, I’ll get over it.

Thanks Mark, but like John Rofrano mentioned above that he discovered the problem last evening and helped resolve it. Vegas12 was trying to load a Vegas12 veg file in Vegas10 even though I was trying to open in within Vegas12. Crazy… Somehow John caught on to what was in no way obvious. Without John’s help our PBS series would have never made it through all the technical evaluation that PBS puts the shows through before they air.

I agree with John also that Windows almost takes full time attention to get everything to work or keep working. I pity anyone just starting out with Windows. I started with computer when the largest hard drive available was 20 megs so I’m not new to computing but I’m constantly having issues.
