Vegas Users with AMD R9 290 or 290X GPUs
Looking to buy an AMD R9-290 or 290X for use in Sony Vegas. I have previously used NVIDIA so I have no experience with AMD cards and could use the thoughts of those who do. Here are my questions:
1) The R9-290X comes in a 4GB version and an 8GB version. Will Vegas even use 8GB VRAM? I want to maximize performance in Sony Vegas but I don’t want to wast money if it is pointless to get the 8GB card. Does anyone monitor their VRAM usage and maxed out the 4GB?
2) I am currently running 4 monitors between my Quadro 4000 & 2000 cards. I want to run 4 (maybe more) on the AMD card(s) as well. Vegas Pro will be run only on the displays connected to the R9 290X. The other monitors will be used for web browsing, file explores, and other applications. I have a few options in which to do this and would like to know what others think:
A) Use my NVIDA GTX 460 for the secondary monitors. If I do this, will the AMD Drivers work with the GTX 460? If not, can I run both AMD and NVIDIA drivers so that both cards are supported?
B) Use my NVIDA Quadro 4000 for the secondary monitors. The same drivers questions asked above apply here as well.
C) As with the other options, use the R9 290X for my primary displays. But instead of an NVIDIA card, use a FirePro 2460 for the secondary monitors. This way both GPUs will be AMD, however, will the Raedon drivers work with the Firepro? I do not need all of the Firepro workstation features. All I am looking for is support for extra monitors without having to buy two R9 290X cards. I was able to do something similar with My Nvidia cards. I used a Quadro 4000 for the primary monitors and the GTX 460 with the secondary. I was using Quadro drivers for both cards.
D) Is there a big enough difference between the R9 290 and the 290X? Is it worth the price? Only the X version has 8GBs though…
E) Any brand recommendations? I do not know who makes a good card. I was looking at the 4 and 8GB versions of the following cards:

Check first the GPU utilization (program running on the secondary monitor) while you work a normal project. Watch video memory usage too.
See if you hit 100% at any phase of production.
If not… a new video card will be just wasting your money.
Especially one that cannot be used by MainConcept encoder (not recognized by the 2010 made plug-in).PS: GTX970 has h265 encoding capability. Not used for now in any video editor, but at least is future proof.

I don’t believe Vegas Pro will take advantage of 8GB of video memory. That’s more for games and 3D software to store textures. 4GB should be plenty of video memory.
I would not mix AMD and NVIDIA cards. It’s hard enough to get one companies drivers to work, I can’t imagine trying to get two companies drivers to play nice together. My advice… Don’t do it!
I also would not mix Radeon and FirePro. Again two different drivers. Stick with all Radeon or all FirePro.

As John said, stick to one brand of Card throughout your configurations.
Thats asking for trouble.I was looking at the 4 and 8GB versions of the following cards:

Good to know. Will mixing different Radeon cards present any problems? I could always get 2 of the R9 290X cards, but it would be cheaper if an older Radeon for my secondary card will work with the same drivers as the primary R9 290X.

Mixing Radeon cards shouldn’t cause any problems. People do this all the time when they just want extra displays. It keeps everything clean with only one set of drivers to install and keep updated.

I have done this with NVIDIA cards but was not sure that the same could be done with Radeon. This was the answer I needed. Thanks all!
