Never worked with either EDL’s or AAF’s before, but need to get a project cut in Sony Vegas to Final Cut to use in Color and export out.

Normally we would export an Unc mov from Vegas, I’d prepare it in FCP for Color and go from there. But if using an EDL/AAF (I understand Vegas does not have support for OMFs) is easier, then I’d really like to know more about it.

I know about Automatic Duck, not really prepared to drop money on it right now until I know more about it (and if it’s necessary). Can an EDL or AAF be used to go from Vegas to FCP? Is Automatic Duck a necessary part of that?

EDLs can be dicey, but since that’s a free path for you, I would suggest you try that first. CMX3600 I think is the one we have used somewhat successfully in the past.

AAFs work brilliantly between Avid and FCP using the Automatic Duck to import the AAF into FCP. We use these all the time for Avid projects that are finished on our FCP systems.

Hi Nicholas. For now you’re stuck with your current workflow. Vegas simply does not play well with others. Wish it were different.

The editor just gave me an EDL from his Vegas cut to test this baby out. It came to me as a .txt file. I’m guessing this isn’t what I need to make it work? Should probably be an AAF? I hear they work better, better than EDL’s anyways.

How can you tell what format it is (i.e. CMX3600)?

Thanks Walt and Mike for your help.

I’ve been researching this until my eyes bleed for the past 48 hours, and I’ve been hearing a lot of people saying how difficult it is to go from Vegas to FCP. I know the two don’t speak the same language, and Sony usually doesn’t get along well with the other kids with anything they put out, but I just need to know if it’s possible (with or without Automatic Duck, preferably without).

I’m going back and forth regularly with my editing partner-in-crime (he swears by Vegas, I swear by FCP) with projects so finding a suitable flow would be outstanding. Up until now we simply render out Unc files in whatever format we like, but I’m going to be coloring this video and would much prefer to color from the source files, for obvious reasons.

Oy, such a headache this business is. Can’t we all just…get along?

If you’re going to do this regularly, then AAF is the way to go. Much more seamless. Keep in mind, you may or may not be able to open the footage depending on the codec the Vegas editor is using.

So in order to do this with AAF’s, is Automatic Duck required to make it happen?

FCP can’t import AAf or OMF without third party software like Automatic Duck. I have used it for importing AAF’s from AVID and ProTools but no experience with Vegas. AAF is supposed to be a standard format so in theory it should work. In practice, who knows what will accurately translate. Obviously various filters and third party plugins may not translate but basic settings should.
