  • Vegas Studio 9 crashes when rending HD

Posted by Neal Wingenbach on January 3, 2011 at 12:51 am

I am editing *.m2ts HD Video files in Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0. When I got to render this as a Windows Media Video V11 (*.wmv), the program immediately stops with an Exception error. Vegas then closes. I have attached files and screenshots to help diagnose this issue. I appreciate any help.

    Windows 7, 64-bit
    Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0
    Version 9.0b (Build 92)

It looks like you’re getting a read error from the mp4 plug-in. If this is a relatively new camera it may not be supported by Movie Studio 9. I would download the trial of Movie Studio HD 10 and see if it fixes the problem. You can’t expect old software to work with a new camera.

I agree that it’s having issues with the mp4 plug-in. The camera is a Sony HDR-SR12. I purchased it in 12/2008 and bought the Sony Vegas Platinum 9 pack the following month. If the Movie Studio HD 10 is the fix than so be it. I really don’t mind that, but I was thinking it was more of an issue with the install, plug-ins, or OS. Yeah, maybe new software will fix it, but I don’t think I had this issue when I was running XP.

Do you think I can run the trial version in parallel with the installed 9?

[Neal Wingenbach] “The camera is a Sony HDR-SR12. I purchased it in 12/2008 and bought the Sony Vegas Platinum 9 pack the following month.”

That should work because the Sony camera is AVCHD which Movie Studio 9 should support. Something else on your computer might be causing the problem. Do you have any codec-paks installed (like K-Lite)? These can sometimes mess up renders.

[Neal Wingenbach] “Do you think I can run the trial version in parallel with the installed 9?”

Yes. I have several versions of Vegas installed for testing purposes and they all live happily side-by-side.

Wouldn’t you know it… I installed the trial version of Vegas Studio HD 10 and its rendering everything fine. I may just upgrade to the latest. Thx.

It’s always best to use the latest software because in addition to having the latest features, it also has the latest fixes. 😉
