Vegas–Something better out there?
Hello All. For my first ever video editing software I bought and used Vegas pro 9 and edited my recent feature film with it. Nearly done with this first project I’m now wondering if Vegas is really what I’ll need as I progress in filmmaking and take on bigger and better projects. With the DVD tuturials I learned the jist of Vegas and it worked great for me. BUT…will it give me what I really need as I become a full-time filmmaker or do I need to upgrade NOW to some leading software such as Avid? What does Vegas truly lack that I’ll sooner or later have to face? For example does it have all the features I’ll need for exporting my audio out to a sound designer, things like that?
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved Vegas up to this point but then again I have nothing else to compare it to. I plan to continue with feature films mainly. I’d hate to have to learn a new program…but I’d hate worse to not upgrade NOW and regret it later. Any advice from the pros out there? Thanks!

The only thing AVID may have over Vegas (besides compatibility with other AVID users) is better media management for large projects and that could be a significant advantage depending on the size of the project.
Other than that, Vegas is lighter and faster and allows a single editor to do more with less (e.g., composition can be done right in Vegas instead of needing 3rd part programs). As for audio… Vegas started out as a multi-track audio editor so it has better audio capabilities than any other NLE out there.

Absolutly. I use Vegas for audio if I don’t need any MIDI instruments. Vegas supports directx and VST audio pluggins. No other NLE does that. They all expect you to use another app for audio.
I believe Vegas still allows you to use several computers to render out large projects for faster renders. Does the new versions still do that John? -

Yes. Network rendering across multiple computers is still a supported feature of Vegas Pro.
