Vegas sing GPU to render file?
Posted by Francis Ament on January 13, 2009 at 1:35 amJust out of curiosity. Does Vegas Pro 8 make any use of the graphics card’s processor to render a video? I was wondering this since there are very powerful graphics cards under $500 and it would be interesting to know if Vegas makes use of the GPU’s power.

January 13, 2009 at 2:56 amThat’s really too bad. Even though I have a Q6700 quad-core extreme CPU, any other thing that can be squeezed out of the computer would be an asset!
Is there any other way to render faster? I’ve tried overclocking 2.6 to 3GHZ and all the cores run 90-99%. It slows when it’s rendering effects, but picks back up again.

January 13, 2009 at 4:09 amVegas only uses raw CPU power so overclocking or getting faster or more cores is the only thing you can do.

January 13, 2009 at 1:15 pmOnly benefit you will gain using GPU graphics card in Vegas is
when you use a plugin that makes use of GPU processing…for
example “Red Giant Magic Bullet Looks” and “Prodad Vitascene”.But still, having a GPU Graphics Card installed is a good idea.

January 14, 2009 at 9:05 pmIt’s a shame, really. Ever since nVidia and ATi switched over to the new unified architecture, they’ve been able to execute any code that a CPU can (instead of just video specific code). There’s been a little talk about CUDA (nVidia’s GPU rendering drivers) but nothing has ever come of it. And now since the v177.xx nVidia drivers PhysX (physics processing, if you don’t know) has been integrated into the drivers so any game that uses PhysX can use the GPU. But once again there’s been little actual advantage it it.
We should be able to open up Vegas, or programs like 3DSMax, Photoshop, and just tick a radio box and boom we can render using the GPU and probably do it much, much faster. But alas, they’d rather reel in the money from graphic card sales in general then get up to speed on GPU rendering 🙁

I can render a HD movie file in 60% of the time that it took me before! Amazing!

January 21, 2010 at 3:48 amDaniel, while it looks interesting, it’s for Movie Studio 9 and AMD.
I’m Intel all the way and use Vegas Pro so it doesn’t help me at all 🙁
