Vegas Pro 11 inexplicably running smoothly after having lots of latency for a few days

Things have been running fine for the past few months, with a few small exceptions. Then for the last few days there’s a half second delay with splitting events, which is very annoying.
Tonight, it just went away. Everything runs instantaneously. I didn’t do anything to my computer, didn’t defrag a hard drive, install any drivers, absolutely nothing. What gives? Apparently, my copy of Vegas can go from functioning fine to running needlessly slowly (why on splitting events?) to running fine without any warning, and back again.
