Vegas Pro 10 scrubbing stutters on h.264 (Canon 5D)
I LOVE the fact that I no longer need Cineform NeoScene to convert my h.264 Canon 5D files. What a time & disk waster that was. So Vegas Pro 10 plays the native files very smoothly on both my systems. However, when I try to scrub the timeline, it stutters. Not much, it’s still worth not using Cineform, but the Cineform converted files do scrub very smoothly. Anyone else seeing this issue, and any way to help it? I tried all the preview quality settings, but they all stutter. Thanks!

Scrubbing an inter frame code is really tough. You should probably perform a RAM preview of the section before you scrub it. Because most intraframe codecs only have a whole frame every 15 frames, NLE’s have to do an incredible about of work to go back one frame (i.e., they must rebuild all of the frames from the last whole frame with all of the deltas just to build that one frame). RAM preview should at least cache the frames and make this smoother.
Cineform will always be smoother because it’s an intraframe codec and every frame is a whole frame so going back one frame means you only have to process one frame.

Thanks John, I thought that was the case. I’m OK with it stuttering when trying to go back and forth, but just thought that going forward-only would be smoother, since it plays at regular speed very smoothly (unlike in previous versions). Still, I’m very happy with V10 now that I’m not required to transcode. And event-level audio effects is fantastic.
