Vegas not importing MP4 files needs “quicktime authoring”
Posted by Morgan Lewis on July 6, 2013 at 8:48 pmI made some .mp4 files capturing game footage with my HD-PVR by accident, I usually have it set to make m2ts files.
On trying to import them to Sony Vegas Pro 10 it says it can’t import because I need quicktime authoring tools, I’ve installed quicktime and it hasn’t changed anything. Could someone direct me to the authoring tools I need for this to work?
Or incidentally, do you think simply renaming the .mp4 files .m2ts might work?

MP4 files created by the HD-PVR are meant for playback on an XBOX not for editing on a PC. Try using a conversion tool like AviDemux to convert the MP4 files to AVI files with M-JPEG video and PCM audio. These should edit fine in Vegas Pro.
Here are the AviDemux settings:

July 7, 2013 at 11:52 amOkay I went with what I assume were the same settings in a newer version.
M-Jpeg Encoder
PCM Audio
AVI Demuxer. When I go to save it gives me an error questioning if the video’s bitrate is too low. I tried doing it with just changing the audio and keeping the video the same, it worked but won’t import to vegas.
Now the mp4s now actually go into Vegas (I needed to restart computer), Video is fine, but about 47 minutes in the audio cuts off and seems to be audio from the beginning of the file. When I play the mp4 however all the audio is fine…
Is there perhaps a way to simply reencode the audio of the mp4 to something more compatible with Vegas? Since it’s obviously not liking the audio of this file, though the video all seems fine. (Well in the project, I haven’t tried a render yet)

Hmmm… I’m really not sure what’s going on there.

I was just trying to get the video into another format so leaving it as mp4 and pwrapping it in an AVI file probably didn’t help.

You mean the original files now work? You really need to not use the mp4 capture option in the future. There is something about these files that Vegas doesn’t like.

Using AviDemux you could set the output to MP4 instead of AVI and set the video to COPY and then set the audio to another format. Maybe try PCM because that is uncompressed and doesn’t involve a codec.

July 9, 2013 at 6:34 pmI managed to save the audio seperately as PCM and it all worked out great. 🙂 I will definitely make sure I don’t accidently save in mp4 again, this was far too much hassle, thanks for the help.
