Vegas no longer recognising .mp3 files or rendering Sony AVC .mp4 files
I’m not sure if this is a Vegas or a PC problem, but recently Vegas Pro 10 has stopped recognising .mp3 and certain other files. In the case of .mp3s, the PC will play them in Windows Media Player, but if I try to import them into Vegas I get a ‘none of the files could be opened’ message. It was working normally and this change happened one day without obvious reason.
At the same time, the Sony AVC .mp4 render option has dissappeared, although I am still able to open such files in Vegas.
.mov files won’t open now (although I have Quicktime installed).
.ac3 is also no longer a render option – along with various others.
I’ve tried uninstalling Vegas and replacing with updated version. I also tried to System Restore, but for some reason there were no restore points saved even though it was turned on.
Anyone got any ideas?

Have you loaded any codec packs? I would use system restore to a time when they did work in vegas.

Out of curiosity, do you have DVD Architect installed? That is where you get the AC3 options (or at least where you used to get the licensing).
As Danny said, have you installed any plugin packs? Also, what version of QT do you have installed? Some version of QT play dirty with Vegas. However, I think the newest version is safe.
If you have system restore turned on and yet your system is not doing periodic backups (system checkpoints) you may want to do a virus/malware scan or ensure you have enough space allotted for such restore points.

Thanks Danny and Jeremy. No, I haven’t loaded any codec packs. I was working on an edit in which I had various .mp3 music tracks. Then the next day, when I opened the job, Vegas couldn’t find those files any more. It asked me to replace them – which I did by pointing Vegas back to the original files – but then once the job was opened the mp3s were marked as offline. I subsequently noticed that the render options list had formats missing.
System restore was my first idea, but this is when I found that no restore points had been saved.
And yes, I have DVD Architect loaded – although before this incident the 64 bit version was working happily. It won’t work anymore and I have to use the 32 bit version. (BTW, I’m running 64-bit Windows 7 with l6Gb RAM.)
Also, I’ve loaded the latest version of Quicktime (v7.6.9). I’ve got this version working well with Vegas on a laptop.
Only other thing, if it is relevent, is that the PC had a power problem around this time. The machine crashed periodically. This has been fixed with a new power supply.
