Vegas doesnt detect video.
When i drag my .mov video footage into vegas it seems to both go onto the same layer, this doesn’t happen in premiere or after effects, only vegas.

Does anyone have any ideas as i really need a fix, I’ve got like 3 days worth of footage i need to edit.
Out of curiosity, i cut and rendered all my footage in after effects with lossless settings because of this problem, is there any negative effect this will have on the footage?
Oh and it’s like this in all versions of vegas as well.

What video codec does the MOV file contain? Open it in QuickTime Player and use Ctrl+I to bring up the Inspector window. The problem you are having is due to Vegas not being able to support whatever video codec is in the file.

No, you don’t need a codec. You need the original XDCAM files. What you have is XDCAM in a MOV container from a Mac. Vegas expects to see XDCAM in a native container like MP4 or MXF. You might try renaming the file extension from .mov to .mp4 and see if Vegas can read the video. Otherwise you need to stop capturing footage on a Mac and expecting to edit it on a PC. That usually doesn’t work.

Okay thank you, when you say ‘stop capturing footage on a mac’ what do you mean? If i took the sd cards directly from the cam to my pc instead of CAM – Mac – PC would i be OK?
Also what would you recommend i do with my footage then? Changing the file extension name doesnt work and i’m kind of stuck :S

Yes, in fact you want to use View | Device Explorer in Vegas to import the footage from your camera if it supports it. You don’t want to just copy the raw files from the SD card because that doesn’t reassemble footage that was split because of the SD card’s file size limitations.

Take it back to the Mac that you captured it on and transcode it to something you can edit on the PC like Avid DNxHD (you will need to download and install this QuickTime codec on both your Mac and your PC). You said that Premiere could edit it on the PC. Perhaps you can export it from Premiere as XDCAM in an MXF file?
