  • Vegas cant seem to import these files Any suggestions?

A friend of mine gave me a video of an actor who has his own demo reel. He wants me to load it into Vegas and do some work on it.

I am not sure if it was created from a MAC or what the history of it is. It was produced by the Actors Talent Agency.

I tried to load it into Vegas using the feature Insert DVD from Camdcorder. Obviously not what I am doing but I have used this feature many many times to import DVD’s before.

However my system freezes and Vegas gives me the Hourglass Icon with nothing happening. The DVD is watchable on a DVD player or on Windows Media etc so it is a good DVD. I just cant import it.

I have included a snapshot of the files that are in the DVD. Can anyone tell me while Vegas cant import these?

    Thanks very much!

It may be DeCSS encoded which means you would need to rip the DVD to the hard drive. Ripping to the hard drive would be an easier way to work with the footage anyway.

    Hi Steve:

That makes sense but the only way I know how to import any kind of DVD is through Sony Vegas Movie Maker. Please flesh out the statement –
“rip to your hard drive”. Do you mean with some sort of interface like a camcorder and with an I-link or something? Would appreciate some clarity. Thanks man!

Sometimes, renaming the .vob to .mpg works.

For the CSS nonsense, look for a DVD Decrypter program on Google. Remove the CSS protection and Vegas should handle the files OK.

If you have access to a Mac I’ve successfully converted to Quicktime from DVD using https://www.dvdxdv.com. I highly recommend it.

Not sure if you could get it across to Vegas, as I’ve never needed to do this with Vegas.

Maybe Handbrake https://handbrake.fr/details.php would also do the job. It looks like DVD Decrypter development has ended. It appears that distribution to the US is considered illegal (???!) Use outside the US is still considered “quasi legal” Or am I misreading this?
