I use Sony Vegas Platinum with my young son. My problem is viewing in preview. We began with animation from still images and the preview worked fine. I then imported a MOV file for editing and the preview is very choppy. Next I installed Vegas on a computer I use only for basic audio production, 2.8 Ghz 2Mb RAM, two hard drives. The preveiew was definitely better but still somewhat choppy.
Will a workstation Video Card in the $100-140 range eg ATI or PNY improve Vegas’ performance in preview? Is there another way to preview so I can edit sync music, voice etc. in real time?

A new video card will have no affect because Vegas does not use your video card GPU for anything. What is the codec used by the MOV file? What preview settings are you using? (Preview Auto works best) Do your project properties match the properties of the MOV file? Having them match will make Vegas work less and therefore improve preview performance.

I ended up rendering my MOV file to avi/DV and it works fine. Thanks for the advice it has steered me towards checking settings. Cheers
