DVDA help identifies a number of Blu-ray compliant AVC formats that you can create if you are using an application other than Sony Vegas:

    From DVDA Help
    720×480 29.970 interlaced 4:3
    720×480 29.970 interlaced 16:9
    720×576 25 interlaced 4:3
    720×576 25 interlaced 16:9
    1280×720 29.970 interlaced 16:9
    1280×720 50 interlaced 16:9
    1280×720 24.000 interlaced 16:9
    1280×720 23.976 interlaced 16:9
    1440×1080 29.970 16:9
    1440×1080 25 16:9
    1440×1080 24.000 16:9
    1440×1080 23.976 16:9
    1920×1080 29.970 16:9
    1920×1080 25 16:9
    1920×1080 24.000 16:9
    1920×1080 23.976 16:9

The implication to me was if I could produce compliant AVC media for DVDA in, let’s say, Premier, I should also be able to produce compliant media in Vegas. But this doesn’t seem to be the case.

Specifically, all attempts to produce compliant (i.e., no DVDA recompress) 1280×720 29.970 16:9 AVC media in Vegas have not worked for me. So my questions are:

    1. Has anyone figured out how to produce these formats in Vegas?
    2. More importantly, why doesn’t SCS provide Vegas AVC templates for all of the blu-ray compliant formats? Perhaps this is a technical issue with Sony’s AVC?

They don’t provide all the templates, because it’s not their obligation to support 720p, even tho it’s part of the spec. If you want the templates, build em’. DVDA won’t work with them.
Try building 720p in Premiere and bringing it into Vegas or Encore.
    It won’t happen.

BTW, your list includes 1280 x 720″i”. There is no such animal. You can easily render a 720p AVC, I do it daily. And it’ll play on a BD player. But it won’t burn in DVDA.

Spot, I am very confused. The list which includes “1280×720 i” is straight out of DVDA help file. The help says you can render compliant footage to any of those formats using 3rd party products.

Regarding what will and won’t work in DVDA – I can create an AVC template in Vegas for 1280×720 23.970p and the render shows up as non-compliant in DVDA. I can take a 1280×720 23.970p MTS file from my camera and drop it into DVDA and it IS compliant.

It looks to me like that entire section of the DVDA help file is misleading or bogus.

It would be very helpful if DVDA identified WHY a clip is non-compliant so we might be able to adjust the render.
