Vegas (and architect). Correct size for DVD? Just guesswork?
Ok so I’m banging my head off a wall. I’ve a total of 2hours of video over three files which i wish to put on a dvd.
Firstly, Is expected reasonable quality a fantasy?
Secondly, Is there really no way of estimating the rendered file size? I’m coming out with sizes too big, and then DVD Architect has to re-encode them to fit and this takes an age! Quite often the preparation fails or freezes.
I’ve read that the idea is to render out using the DVD Architect templates and that way DVD Architect has no encoding to do.
The files need to fit though. What is the best way to adjust the file size? Lowering the quality slider? Or reducing the bit rate? And to what value?
Any advice would be appreciated!

It all depends on your source footage. If it’s good, DVD quality will be good as well.

Yes there is. Use the bitrate calculator found at https://www.johncline.com/bitcalc110.zip and do a custom MPEG-2 encode. I’ve been using it for several years and it’s never let me down.
For a 2 hr. DVD, do a 2-pass encode with the following VBR numbers: 8,200,000 / 4,688,000 / 2,808,000

I had looked at that Bitrate Calculator before, and thought it was quite complicated looking! Perhaps I should just perservere! I’ll try your settings first and see if that works out for me!
Of the two hours, theres one 5 minute clip which I’d prefer to be best possible quality. Which of your settings should I adjust to boost the quality on this particular video?

Assuming that this is a single program and that they’re all on the same Vegas timeline, everything gets rendered using the same master setting.
If these are to be individual “programs” on the final DVD, then you could get away with a custom CBR of 8,000,000 for that one only.
The AC-3 file would have to rendered separately as well.
Make sure both the audio & video files have the same name and go to the same folder. -

It should be pointed out that if you don’t like using a bitrate calculator, you can just render to DV AVI and let DVD Architect fit it to disc as an MPEG2. There shouldn’t be much of a quality hit for DVD.
